Greetings from Los Angeles---

long the home of lovers of Triumphs, whether desert sleds, coastline tourers, Sunday racers and garage custom builders.

I just bought my first triumph (in neighboring Arizona), and have actually come upon a bit of a mystery in trying to register it here in California. The previous owner bought the bike in California, and claimed that it was a 1967 TR6. Despite registering the bike in Arizona he still had the California license plate. This is of note because the plate (which the DMV confirms to still be assigned to the bike) is a black plate (so-called because the plate is black with chrome yellow characters. The last year that California assigned a black plate was in 1969. For the bike to have been assigned this plate it must be a 1969 or earlier. However, the title erroneously states the bike to be a 1971. Online VIN decoders suggest that the bike is a 1968 given the last six digits of DU8414 fall into the DU66246-DU85903 range claimed by several online VIN decoders to belong to the 1968 650. However, the VIN begins with TR6SR---leading me to believe that the bike is a TR6S/R model which, to my understanding, were only manufactured between 1964-66... Given the customization of pipes etc, that have occured over the years other visual cues are non-existent... I've written to the TOMCC, but beyond that I'm unsure what other resources are available. Advice is appreciated and I will update as I have more information.

I've ridden for a number of years and previously lived in Chicago with several stints in other cities and extended travel. I am a grad student studying architecture.

Welcome to the forum from the Sunshine State. Do the numbers on the frame and the engine match? If they do not, the engine has been swapped. I suggest that you post this dilemma in the Classics section where some of our experts will see it.

The frame and engine do match--I'll be posting in the classics section as soon as my registration is verified. cheers!

Thanks again for all the warm welcomes!

While I await a reply from the VMCC about obtaining factory records, Richard Wheadon at the Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club (which I am now a proud member) has been very helpful in dating my bike---as a 1964 TR6SR shipped to Johnson Motors here in Southern California in January of 1964. Thanks again for the advice, I look forward a long relationship with my TR6 and new friendships with fellow enthusiasts!
