[h=1]Parent Tossed From High School Hockey Game For Aiming Laser Pointer At Goalie[/h]WINTHROP (CBS) — Medway-Ashland’s girls high school hockey team lost their appeal of their playoff loss Friday, after a parent was tossed from the game for aiming a laser pointer into the eyes of their goalie.

Winthrop beat Medway-Ashland 3-1 on Wednesday at Larsen Rink.

The score was tied 1-1 in the third period when the father of a Winthrop player was caught pointing the laser at the Medway-Ashland goalie.

It’s kind of like when you look at the sun and then you look away you see that spot and you can’t see for a couple of seconds. You shake your head and try to get it out of the system and just keep focusing, but it’s difficult,†Medway-Ashland goalie Kathryn Hamer told WBZ-TV.

Winthrop assistant superintendent Lisa Howard went into the stands and ordered the parent out of the arena.

Parents of the Medway-Ashland players asked that the third period be replayed.

Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association spokesman Paul Wetzel told WBZ the appeal was rejected Friday afternoon.

Winthrop will play Braintree as scheduled Saturday.

Winthrop superintendent John Macero said the father has been barred from all events involving Winthrop High School.
“I don’t know what the person was thinking,†Macero told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday.

“Why would you do that to both teams? Both teams, they’ve earned the right, Medway girls, the Winthrop girls, to have this opportunity to perform in a game and for someone to come in and do that inappropriate action was uncalled for.â€

WBZ-TV’s Jim Armstrong reports

“I think it’s important for Medway to understand that we are just as upset at this situation too, because it kind of puts a black eye on Winthrop and those kids don’t deserve that, neither does Medway.â€

Macero said he may explore the possibility of criminal charges against the man.

That's exactly what I was thinking.
Idiots have also been known to aim lasers at the cockpit of low flying passeneger jets.
There seems to be no limit to the horrific things so-called civilized humans are capable of!

In Pittsburgh's Oakland section, there's a few colleges and a whole bunch of hospitals.

College students have been pointing those lasers into the cockpits of Medical Rescue helicopters that land on the roofs of these hospitals.

I can't even imagine the death and destruction that would take place if one of those helicopters crashed in a very heavily populated and extremely compact area of a city like that!!

There have been folks successfully prosecuted for pointing lasers at aircraft. Hard to catch someone in the act, though.

I hope criminal charges are filed against that idiot.

When those laser pointers were first introduced in Pennsylvania, they were classed as a weapon.

They must not be anymore because I see them for sale everywhere....even at the pet shop my Daughter used to work at.

It is pretty funny to watch a cat chase the little spot of light around the house!

I ejected a parent from a ball game because of her camera's flash sensor. I asked her one time to shut the flash off, it was distracting the pitcher and my base ump. She only did it when her son was at the plate but I gave her the benefit of the doubt that she was only trying to get a photo of her son getting a hit. I even asked her to move from behind the plate to the first baseline but she said that would distract her son. At that point i warned the coach I would be taking action if she did it again and that if it effected the play I would take further action if he did not handle it before it happened again. Between innings I spoke with my base ump to let me know if she did it again. Next inning he came back up again, the coach had not said a word to his fans and she took a multiple set of photos and even with my back to her I saw the strobe of the flash, my partner indicated the red LED/laser had also fired multiple times. I could tell by the pitchers actions she had flash blinded him just prior to the release of the 3-2 2 out pitch. The pitch sailed high and outside, I called a third strike, turned and ejected the woman. When the coach came out of the dugout with his arms spread and a questioning look on his face he found himself gone too. In high school baseball arguing balls and strikes are auto ejections. There was almost always school district cops at the games in this school district for any after school sports events and the woman was escorted out of the stadium to a round of applause by those sitting around her. Heck I think her husband was leading the cheers and was the one that thanked me after the game.

I took player safety seriously and most of the coaches knew it. It took a couple of them a couple of games to realize it but the word got around to even the ones I'd never called a game for.

Yes, you have to act on these things.

But come on too.....I can't believe what kind of person deliberately shines a laser pointer at a high school goalie's eyes! There's something seriously wrong with someone who'd do that. He can't even come up with any excuse like the lady with the camera. It's infinitely obvious what his motive was....and did I say it was high school!? Unbelievable!

UPDATE:

[h=1]Dad Regrets Aiming Laser At High School Goalie, Will Face Charges[/h]
WINTHROP (CBS) – The father accused of pointing a laser into the eyes of a high school hockey goalie will face criminal charges.

According to Winthrop Police, 42-year-old Joseph Cordes will be charged with disturbing the peace.

Last Wednesday, Cordes, the father of a Winthrop girls hockey player, was caught pointing the laser at the Medway-Ashland goalie. Winthrop Assistant Superintendent Lisa Howard went into the stands and ordered him out of the arena.

“I wish I could undo it,” Cordes tells WBZ-TV. “I feel like a complete jerk. It was very stupid, completely immature for a 42-year-old man to be doing that.”

Winthrop went on to win the game 3-1.

Cordes was barred from all events involving Winthrop High School.

“My daughter, the humiliation I put her through is sickening to tell you the truth,” says Cordes.

Medway-Ashland goalie Kathryn Hamer told WBZ-TV that the laser affected her play.

“It’s kind of like when you look at the sun and then you look away you see that spot and you can’t see for a couple of seconds. You shake your head and try to get it out of the system and just keep focusing, but it’s difficult,” she said.

Parents of the Medway-Ashland players asked that the third period be replayed. The MIAA rejected that request.

“I don’t know what the person was thinking,” Winthrop Superintendent John Macero told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday. “Why would you do that to both teams? Both teams, they’ve earned the right, Medway girls, the Winthrop girls, to have this opportunity to perform in a game and for someone to come in and do that inappropriate action was uncalled for.

I do not think charging him is over the top. Here he could have been charged with assault, a felony. I think charging him sets the standard for others who would be copy cats. He committed a criminal act against a kid; he should be charged.

Yes, but I've heard/read about adult coaches punching kids on opposing teams before. They get in trouble with the league and normally barred from events, but not usually charged with a crime.

Remember Ohio State's Woody Hayes?
