Over the last few days we have had some heavy rain and our local Animal Welfare Society got flooded out. they announced this one the local radio station and within hours had plenty volunteers arriving to help out :y18:

Subject: THANK YOU PE! (Port Elizabeth is also know as PE)

WHAT CAN I SAY PE? YOU ARE AWESOME!

Every animal is dry and warm and will be dry and warm tonight. As for the volunteers, well we're still wet, cold, bedraggled, hungry and absolutely exhausted. But we couldn't be happier right now! J

I could not believe what greeted me when I arrived at AWS today. The response was overwhelming. I don't know where or who to start thanking. We've had the media helping us by appealing to the public, companies volunteering to pump water off the grounds. The public were there in droves along with fellow animal charities. Laundromats volunteered to wash and dry blankets. So many sent emails, sms and facebook messages. A lot of animals went to foster homes and the animals still at AWS are indoors. Companies have offered to assist us next week to avoid this happening again. And, and, and.

We received wonderful donations of blankets, towels, food, litter and cash.

To every person who helped in any way, THANK YOU! We can't express what it means to us, knowing that we have so many wonderful people in PE who are willing to assist others in need.

We hope to see you all at AWS soon and our animals will always remember how caring PE is. Besides being wet and cold this morning, they are all fine. A mommy cat gave birth to three little kittens in the midst of the chaos!

With much love and appreciation from AWS management, staff, animals and committee

Strange observation but it's true. Maybe it's because we view most animals as helpless. It usually takes a major disater for peolple to respond and then things are forgotten (Haiti)....

Animals can sense impending danger such as bad storms and tsunamis. They'll normally move away from danger when they are in the wild. But seeing how we keep them captive and they can't follow their instincts, it's up to us to save them.

Of course that doesn't apply to the horse I had struck by lightning a few years ago...to dumb to move from the open pasture and get under the shelter!
