Well I've just finished this book by George "Johnny" Johnson.
It's basically his life story form the early years of his life in Lincolnshire to his enlistment in the Royal Air Force, and his time and training leading up to one of the most talked about raids on Germany, by the RAF. And his time after the raid, and the rest of his career in the RAF
I found this book very hard to put down, and for anyone who has the slightest interest in the RAF and the raids on the dams, this is a must read book. If I were you, I'd take a look at this documentary ( Below ) just before you get to the chapter on Smooth Landings and the Dams Raid ( Ch 7 ) I found that it put faces and events together to give me a greater understanding of what crews did what, and the crews who never returned

As some of you know, I did a tour of RAF Scampton, where 617 Sqdn was based and have been in Guy Gibson's office, and then I went off to Germany to see the 3 Dams themselves.
Reading this book and putting all that I've seen and now read about what went on all them years ago, only fills me with an even greater ( If that's possible ) admiration, for these Hero's that boarded these planes night after night, knowing full well that they may well never come home again.
How on earth do you measure courage like that.
I'm sure that you'll enjoy this book should you buy it.

Jack, I'm sure that you'll enjoy reading this book. If the Military interest's you, you might like to take a look at this thread that I started last year in the Military section on this forum, when the Canadian Lancaster came to RAF Coningsby, which is only 23 miles from me. This thread had lots of participation from others on this forum, and I think that you might like it. You may already have seen it. There are lots of photos in my albums of the Lancaster arrival, and the tour that I took whilst it was in the hanger, then the departure of the Lancaster back to Canada, that again may be of interest to you.
