Great duct tape story.

During a private "fly-in" fishing trip in the Alaskan back country, a bush pilot and the fisherman let a cooler and bait in the airplane. A bear smelled it. This is what the bear did to the plane.

The pilot radioed another pilot and had him bring two new tires, 3 cases of duct tape, and a rolls of sheet plastic. The pilot patched the plane together and flew it home.

Duct tape - don't leave home without it.

I wonder where the got all the tape :y2:

According to the narrative with the pics, he asked for three cases of duct tape to be brought in with the other items he asked for.
As long as the airframe and controls weren't damaged, the plane was probably as strong as it ever was.
Anyway, he appaently flew it out OK.
The damage done by the bear is pretty amazing:y13:

Keep in mind that that is a fabric (canvas) covered aircraft.

Yeah, that's why I said it was probably as strong as it ever was. The strength is in the airframe not the skin.

My first flight was at age 10 in a canvas-covered yellow Piper Cub - circa 1947 or 1948.
There was some sort of promotion, contest or rewards program in the local newspaper involving a local gas station or gasoline company.
Every time my father bought gas at this particular gas station he had a card punched or some sort of record made.
The prize was a 20 minute flight in a Piper Cub, and at the end of the promotion, he won!!!
Instead of going up himself he let my sister and I go up. What a thrill that was!!!!!!!!!

I suspect the pilot had difficult time getting the aircraft trimmed out. It looks like the horizontal stabilizer received some damage. However, those old Pipers would fly under amazing circumstances.

My first flight was in a Piper TriPacer. It belonged to the Pinecastle AFB Aero Club. Col Michael McCoy was at the pilot. He was the commander of the SAC bomb wing based at Pinecastle. The base was later renamed McCoy AFB after he was killed in a crash. He deliberately flew his B-47 into the ground to keep it from crashing into a civilian housing subdivision. It is Orlando International Airport today.

Carl, I had a similar experience as a kid. An Air Force Pilot staid with his F-86 Saber and crash instead of hitting our school. Where do we get such heros? God bless them.

What does bear meat taste like??

It tastes pretty gamey unless it is prepared properly. My aunt could cook it very well. She used a two step marinating process. Then end result was meat that tasted like sweet roast beef and had about the same consistency. Back in the '50's, we ate bear quite frequently. You get a lot of meat from one bear.
