Hi everyone,I’m new to this site and would be really grateful for any input you chaps can give me on my foray into a trident rebuild..the cases are split and the second gear has taken a mashing, the bolt in the alternator shaft was also sheared( which I found out is a common problem) ,as I am mock Up the replacement gearbox prior to installation I’ve noticed( alarmingly) that the spring sets in the main clutch basket are loose and rattling about in there holes, half the springs coloured red are a tight fit but the other half which are grey slide about ,can this be normal??. My instinct says no and that I should try and find a replacement but I hope some one here might be able to put me straight!

Morning

Have just checked the spare basket I have here and the red springs are tight while the others have movement.

From memory, when I took my clutch apart to check the starter shaft several years ago the basket springs were the same. The mileage on my 900 is now on the 88000 mark ( all mine as have had from new) and I currently have no clutch noise, trying to find some wood to touch as I write this.

So looks like thats a normal situation and I wouldnt worry about it unless the Red ones and or the securing rivits look iffy.

To the alternator bolt. That is a new one on me and have never heard of issues with it.

Thanks ,that is a relief, especially as a new clutch basket is well expensive!.I think the recall was for the bolt engine/clutch side on what is called “ the sprag”,there is a post here that I read on it with the recall changing the sprag bolt for a hardened one…not a difficult job I don’t think. Thanks so much for your time ,I can now put it all back together again( like Humpty Dumpty!)).

No problem.

Thats if they are still available. I know a lot of the early Triple and Four cylinder stuff was becoming harder to source and that was pre C19.

The sprag is a known fault and is usually due to low battery output not winding the engine up and the rollers drag, but you wont hear people tell you that one. Got that from an AA motorcycle recovery driver and my own investigations. Another one for the Tuesday evening pub quiz.

Hope you get it all sorted .
