Hey there..
I need to replace ther kickstart shaft on my 78 T140V.
Anyone done this before?
Are there any gotchas before I dive in?

Any advice/information greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Dave, GrandPaul is the expert here. He rebuilt a 1968 TR6 for me. He will be along and give you guidance. Keith is also a top notch mechanic and can help you. If neither posts right away, send them a PM (private message).

Piece of cake.

If the bike is on the sidestand, you probably won't even have any tranny oil drips (but use a drip pan anyway).

Loosen the set pin nut and tap the pin loose in the kickstarter; once it's loose, remoe the nut and tap the pin free (careful with the threads).

Remove the two nuts and (5 or 6?) cover screws, remove the cover.

Note the orientation of the shaft's pin grove with relation to the engament gear's teeth, you want it to re-align the same with the new one (assuming the old one had proper alignment where a solid kick started at about 80 degrees vertical).

Also note the return spring engagement in the splined grooves on the shaft, you'll want it to be installed the same, again assuming the old kicker snapped back smartly and fully on release).

Pop the old shaft and/or gear (or both) out, pop the new one(s) in, observing alignment of all the bits in proper order.

Carefully and fully clean both cover mating surfaces (the case, and the cover). Smear a bit of lithium grease on both mating surfaces, and install the new gasket (or old one if in excellent shape, and you forgot to order a new one!).

"Wind up" tension on the spring by first hooking the looped end on the retainer pin, then rotating the kicker counter-clockwise to the point where the gear will engage the stop peg on the inner cover when you slide everything home. The kicker should be very near 90 degrees vertical.

Slide the cover home and button it up with the screws and 2 nuts. Tighten snugly, do not strip the threads of heads!

Start bike on first kick, ride the finest roads in your area, come home happy, kiss your wife, sip something cool and post a happy report.
