I have a 2014 Tiger 800XC and I have been thinking about selling or trading for a newer Explorer 1200. I have no problem with my Tiger except I would appreciate more power especially now that my wife wants to ride with me. And, I like the shaft drive and no chain maintenance. I realize that the weight of the bike will be greater and more top heavy. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

The extra 400 cc will definitely be welcome when riding two up. I ride with my wife quite a bit on mine and good comfort for us both, especially on our less than stellar back roads.
Lots of complaints about poor heat management on the big Tigers. Not sure what the 800s are like, but you will notice it on the 1200s, especially in the Southern climes. Only a good test ride with you and your wife will tell you if it's right for you.

having dropped my 2012 Tiger 1200 on my left leg in November 2021 snapping my Tibia and fibula clean through requiring a nail and screws to be inserted and only now feeling like I am getting back to near normal use of my leg but still painful I would say just be very careful .Ive been riding large motorcycles all my life and always owned one .Still love my bike but your looking at a 40-45 kgs difference thats a lot up top, take a two up test ride before committing yourself . Good luck be safe .

Just dug out the Cycle World April 2013 ,special adventure issue . Top gear roll on test results , 40 to 80 mph .
KTM 990. 9.5 sec
Super Tenere 9.2 sec
Tiger 800 xc 7.7 sec
Even with two up the 800 might be ok .

I don't know what it means, but it is measure of how long it takes to go from 40mph to 80mph. Usually it is an almost meaningless number to the average person. In this case, it suggests that the Tiger 800 would still be competitive with two people on the bike; the Tiger can get out of its own way.
