UP IN FLAMES: A house burns in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape on Sunday. Up to 100 homes were destroyed, the municipality said

A DEVASTATING wildfire that destroyed more than 100 houses in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape was under control by Monday morning, the Kouga municipality said.

On Sunday evening, pictures posted to social network Twitter by residents and news organisations showed rows of houses ablaze, with flames reaching high into the sky.

"The fire now has been half-extinguished, with no more immediate threat to other houses," said municipal spokeswoman Laura-Leigh Randall in an update via SMS. "We don’t have any final figure yet but it would be more than 100 houses burnt down."

Firefighters battled for hours with raging flames fanned by a strong westerly wind.
Ten fire engines had been brought to fight the blaze and more were called in from the Nelson Mandela Bay and Kou-Kamma municipalities to help, Ms Randall said.

"The cause of the fire is not known but the fire started at about 5.30pm at Royal Wharf developments, which is mainly townhouses," she said.

All residents in the area were asked to evacuate and a temporary joint operations centre was set up at the local police station.

Most of the houses in the area are holiday homes.

Fortunately no one got injured at all and those that live there managed to evacuate as it was late afternoon so that is one good thing that came out of this. The town itself does not have a fire department but a volunteer service and the fire departments form Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas responded to the fire about a 90 minute ride.

Some of these house destroyed are valued at around R18 Million SA or $2.5 Million US

The news this morning said around 150 houses gone

Absolutely devastating. I'm trying to get details of the assistance fund for an 80yr old who has lost everything - his home in totality and everything in it. Only thing he has left is the clothes he was wearinng. My heart and prayers go out to all who have lost so much in this tragedy.

I will see what I can find out during the day this side

Trouble with Mother nature is she does'nt discriminate.
For the people in the flash homes, its a shame but they will be insured,
For those at the other end of the scale, who cant afford insurance, its an absolute tragedy.

Well I hope that they are insured but I think they would be. I believe the insurance is high because of the thatched roof and this is one of the building regulation in that area the houses must be white with a thatch roof or some other type not sure what the alternative is but most are thatched

It is always nice to see people coming together to help in times like this

"Braai fire" not the cause of St Francis Bay blaze

Management of the Royal Wharf in St Francis Bay where Sunday night's devastating fires started, have rejected suggestions that the blaze was a result of a "braai fire."

Ten of the 20 units at Royal Wharf were destroyed in the fire that eventually laid waste to 68 homes on the canals, six apartments and a business premises.

Just four time-share units were left standing. The cause of the blaze will be the subject of a police forensic investigation.

Shell-shocked home owners milled around burnt out structures that were once luxury homes or holiday homes on Monday while curious onlookers continued to flock to St Francis Bay.

Stacey Gill of Port Elizabeth says they've had a holiday house in St Francis Bay for the past 15 years or so which has now been completely destroyed.

"We heard last night (Sunday night) at about six-ish and we rushed out here from PE and our house was still fine. Our neighbours house wasn't even burnt yet but within the space of 5-10 minutes that house had gone up in flames. Our neighbours house went up in flames and we had to evacuate, the police said it was too dangerous you need to go."

Meanwhile, as homeowners and insurances assessors count that cost that is expected to run into hundreds of millions of rands, a sense of optimism remains that St Francis will rise from the ashes.

That was the sentiment expressed by Beth Mortimer, of the St Francis Chronicle, a tabloid and online newspaper for the area.

She says its been a trying time for St Francis following earlier floods and the the collapse of the Sand River Bridge.

"If you had to go and just look at the sight of the houses it is depressing but people are not letting that overtake them, which to outsiders (may be) very surprising but not if you know St Francis. They actually are determined to overcome this and try and make some good out of the mess and try and restore the town to what it was in the past."

Mortimer says the cameraderie amongst the locals has been amazing.

"St Francis Bay is actually a very unique town in the sense that whenever disaster strikes everybody stands together and they help one another, you know they go out of their way to help one another. They are just marvellous that way the people who live in St Francis Bay," she said.

Holy cr@p. Those before and after shots sure bring it home to a person. How awful for those people - to loose everything!!

If I lived in a thatched property next to a canal, I would definitely install a permanent ic powered water pump for fire emergencies. Have even thought about it for home, using my pool as a water source.
I know hindsight is perfect, but to see all that water next to those burned out shells is terribly ironic!

It is hey and I was thinking the same thing about a water pump maybe being the way to go. Apparently a farmer responded and brought in his irrigation system but by the time he had it all sorted out the fire was already a runaway and could not be stopped

Thanks for the before and after pics. That puts it in perspective for those of us across the pond and around the world. Fire and flood are so totally devastating. I am really glad no one was injured or killed.
