Does anyone know if you must remove the chrome coating before spraying a matt colour, or is a light sanding enough for the paint to grip?

Hi Avion, I have recently painted some chrome stuff black on my bonnie. I sanded the chrome with 600 wet and dry, applied 2coats of etching primer, wet and dried it with 1200 and then 3 coats of black.
The etching primer is recommended for bare metal, aluminium and stainless and chrome.
I was unable to get it in spray cans though, I applied it with a small sponge roller. The light sanding with 1200 wet and dry removed any small marks left by the sponge. I was pleased with the end result.

thanks gumpt. I will be spraying 2 pack satin black. Not sure when I'll get around to doing this though - hopefully before it starts to get cold though.

Avion ,
No you don't have to sand chrome.
In fact it would be best not to.
In case you want to change back , if you don't like
it , or later what to bring back to stock looking
All you have to do is use expoxy primer .
Later , to return to chrome , in which mean time
possibly years later paint has protected chrome
from rusting & pitting .
Just soak part in lacquer thinner bucket for day or so
Look like new again

Thanks very much for those words.
I particularly like the returning to the original chrome tip very much.

I've had to put my projects on hold for now. Hopefully with a bit of luck by the middle of next month I can start playing again.

Thanks for that info Wayne, I have not heard of epoxy primer before. It will same me some 'elbow grease' rubbing down the next time I'm painting any chrome!
