Hi ..... just had tire valve replaced and the speedo packed in on my ride home. Its still clocking distance.
I have checked the cable is ok and having removed the clock itself I've used a drill ..... when its in reverse (counterclockwise) and the speed indicator operates as it should ..... when I use the drill to drive it clockwise the speed indicator doesn't move. Is this normal for a magnetic speedo ?
It seems coincidental that the problem arose after the wheels removal and I'm hoping the issue is with the hub

If it works on the drill, it should work on the hub too. The hub fixture has two tabs that have to be inserted into recesses to drive the speedo gear. I'd first look at that. Also make sure you have lube on the drive cable. Below is the exploded view of the front wheel on a 92 Trophy. The drive ring #7 has to be seated in the speedo drive #9. You can test the drive unit by elevating the front wheel and spinning it with the cable seated in the drive while removed from the back of the speedo. If the cable is turning then the speedo should work.

Thanks for taking the time to give such an informative and detailed reply ..... much appreciated. I removed the centre stand as I couldn't manage to use it - unlike my CB1000 that used to lift easily. I'm sure I can attach something to the top end of the speedo cable and see if its turning.
Regards
John
PS
Do you know if the cable should rotate clockwise or anti clockwise inside the clock ?

The cable drive comes off toward the rear of the bike on my '98 so it turns the cable counterclockwise. You'll need to check the drive unit. If you have a scissor jack to raise the bike off the ground it would be helpful in diagnosing your issue. Pull the cable unit off at the front wheel drive unit and check if the cable is seated in the drive unit. Here's a video on stuff that can go wrong (this is on a Polaris ATV, but the principals are the same):

Your speedo hub should look like this:

You may need to remove it from the wheel to check the tabs are aligned to drive the speedometer cable. You can pull the cable from the hub by removing the screw holding it and check the cable is properly seated in the drive.

Your post indicated the odometer was stii operating so that suggests it isn't a cable problem. My 2007 sometimes acts up as you describe and after a few miles the speedo works again. I haven't bothered to fix mine yet but believe it's an issue inside the speedo head with the magnet driven indicator sticking for some reason and then releasing and working again.
