Some People Have a Sick Sense of Humour

Well I nearly had a heart attack! Was walking back to my car in an underground parking today, very pre-occupied and harassed. I sort of noticed a young guy standing near a pretty old car that looked like it had seen better days, with a young guy behind the wheel but didn't really pay much attention to either.

Just as I passed, the driver started up the car and there was a huge bang! I jumped out of my skin and turned around just in time to the other young man clutching his chest and dropping to the ground. I ran to help because I thought he'd been shot!

When I got there, the 2 of them cracked up laughing! They knew the car backfired when they started it and decided to play a prank to see what reaction they'd get! And they had to pick on an old lady!:y11: Anyway, when my heart slowed down to a blur, I cracked up with them. I just couldn't be angry - so glad that not everyone's lost their sense of humour even if it was at my expense!:y2:

My buddy and I used his trucks backfire to play a joke when I was 17, we ended up face down on the street with the Sheriff thinking we had been shooting at people.

Back in the day when I was around 20 - 21, I had an old V8 Ford car that I had installed dual exhausts. It was the first of several hot rod cars I had before I was married. The mufflers were a straight through type packed with fibreglass. They weren't loud and annoying, but made a nice rumble.
I forget how I stumbled on this trick, but if I shut off the ignition and coasted for a few seconds in gear enough gas would build up in the pipes and exploded with a big bang and flames would shoot out of the tail pipes when I turned the ignition back on.
I'll admit we had some "fun" scaring people.
I remember one incident when some nitwit was tailgating me and I did that to him. He quickly backed off when the flames came shooting out with a loud bang :y2:

Rocky, one of my buddies installed a Model T coil and put a spark plug in each tail pipe of his 48 Merc V8. With the press of a button he could generate some real flames!

Good one they pulled on you Gromit. Glad it was all taken in the fun intended.

My old Harley would belch fire when she was running a little rich. It would happen the most when pulling away from a stop. If I chopped the throttle real quick and hit the throttle again hard with the up shift the fire ball would hide me and the bike. If I had a tailgater while running thru town I'd reach down and adjust the carb at a stop sign or red light and then light them up as we pulled away. I got rid of a lot of tailgaters that way, one of them was a State Trooper. I got pulled over and had to explain my actions to him. Told him I felt he was ridding my butt and I was just trying to put a little extra distance between us, I had no idea how it backfired that way. :y2: He didn't tailgate me as we pulled off again.
