Smiths chronometric speedo

In one of the British classic bike magazines I subscribe to there is an article on the Smiths chronometric speedometer.
I have never seen the inside of a Smiths speedo (or any other speedo) so I was interested in the article and the attached diagram. There's a lot more in there and a lot more going on than I thought!

It's a clock that tells time in revolutions of a motorcycle tire instead of revolutions of the earth.

Way too many moving parts to be practical, but still quiite cool the way they "tick" off the miles!

Ummmmm...I can look at it and I can see it, but I still can't figure out how it works!

Do they still make clocks with dials and hands????
