I’ve just returned from a holiday to Australia – my son moved to Brisbane 2 years ago.

While we were there we took a day trip up to a nature reserve – they had guided tours on Segways (a kind of stand up scooter) I thought this looks like fun & we signed up for a 2 hour jaunt into the forest.

The Segway was a bit tricky to ride, but I thought ‘this is easy – I ride a bike’….

I’m still not sure where I went wrong, but going up a gravel slope it seemed to stall & I fell awkwardly on my left arm.

2 hour ride in an ambulance, 4 days in hospital, a titanium plate in my wrist & a rather large plaster cast.

And 9 screws to hold it all together.

The doctor said I should give up ‘adventure sports’….

Has anyone else had this kind of wrist surgery & did it give any problems when you rode your bike?

Oh Sh*t!
Sorry mate, hope you were looked after OK by our hospital system.
Haven't had that kind of surgery but many have and continue to ride just fine.

Edit,

My wife just looked at your post and said,
"Tell him to get a couple of injections and get back onto that bike (segway) just like the GP riders".

Yes I was well looked after at the Southport Hospital - although I suspect that hospital food & airline food are grown in the same Petri dish....:y7:

I will, as soon as I get a Segway with a handle bar extension that can hold a saline drip :y2:

Wow Les that was a bit of bad luck and I was always told bikes are dangerous. I must admit I have always wanted to try one of those things but I think I will do so on a flat soft surface if I do :y2:

that sucks! You looked in quite a bit of pain under that blanket.

Heal up soon Les -, keep the titanium plate eh? Good scrap value. :D

No idea about recovery, but with some physio you should be back on a bike in 3 months easy.

...

Segways take more practicing than I'm sure you were allowed to have. Not the best idea to rent them out to people without more time to get accustomed to them in my opinion....especially if you're going on inclines and such.

Sorry to see you found that out the hard way. Speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear about your accident, and to happen on holiday, that just sucks! I'm having 2nd thoughts about giving a Segway a try now.

You must do the physio exercises they'll teach you when the cast comes off. FS's bro-in-law went head over heels over his bike, broke both wrists badly and 6 months later did a trip from the tip of S-America to the top of N-America. If he hadn't done the physio religiously, he wouldn't be riding.

Really hope you heal well and heal fast.

Thanks everyone for all you good wishes.

I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow & all being well I’ll start physio on Thursday, wearing a plastic bag in the shower & having the misses cut my food for me is getting a bit tiring.

When I was in Aussie I met up with my 2 brothers (from Auckland – New Zealand) I hadn’t seen them for many years & they both said I was lucky to break my wrist as I could have landed on my head & died…. Brotherly love comes in many guises. :y7:

Before I went on holiday I was thinking about getting a new bike & yesterday I sat on all three Tigers (800/1050/1200) so I now have a goal – complete physio – get a new bike.

I wouldn't feel too embarrassed by the Segway crash.......

[h=1]Segway company owner rides scooter off cliff, dies [/h]
According to the British media, Heselden, 62, plunged into the River Wharfe while riding a rugged country version of the two-wheeled transporter on Sunday.

Police said a witness had reported seeing a man fall over a 30-foot drop into the river near Boston Spa, 140 miles north of London.

"Police were called at 11.40 a.m. yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above," a spokesman told The Daily Mail.

A Segway was recovered from the scene. "At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious," the spokesman added.

"It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Jimi Heselden has died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire," his company, Hesco Bastion, said in a statement.

A dozen members of Heselden's family asked for privacy Monday after placing flowers at the heavily wooded accident site, which is popular with hikers and nature lovers.

This is an 'incident report' from a company that I used to work for:-

An incident occurred on Friday 25[SUP]th [/SUP]May 2012 in the Lower Basement Parking area which resulted in a fractured wrist requiring further orthopaedic attention (operation to insert metal support plate with screws etc).

The employee convinced a Security Guard to allow him to ride on the Segeway Scooter, he lost his balance and fell on the concrete fracturing his left wrist.

This unauthorised use of equipment by an untrained person resulted in serious consequences for the employee and security guard concerned.

The unauthorised use of any equipment is strictly forbidden, and strict disciplinary measures will be taken against any person found guilty of such transgressions.

Let us all learn from this incident and ensure that it never occurs again.

*The company has just lost its 1.2million hours without a 'lost time injury'*
