T100 Bonneville Black
Hi all fellow bikers.
Do any of you have a Scalar Cardo G9 power sets and suffer wind noise coming through the pillion microphone?
Well I have had an issue with this after updating to the G9 from the Scalar Q2 Multiset which worked extremely well with no noise issues at all.
The issue I am experiencing is using the same helmets previously used with the Q2 Multi sets I have installed the G9 power sets in the same manner.
What I first noticed was the wind noise which previously we did not experience and after further investigation I have come to the following conclusion that the mic gain on the G9 power sets are so much higher than the Q2 Multi sets.
So high that I do not only hear excessive wind noise through the pillion microphone but I can also hear the exhaust through the pillion mic!
I turned down the AGC and Vox to low and still no better so to prove my theory and to improve the wearability I have made the following modifications.
I first decided that the speakers were very limited in frequency range and also created pressure on our outer ears which on long rides become extremely uncomfortable so I removed the speakers wired in a 3.5mm stereo socket so I could use ear phones in which I purchased the Sennheiser CX-300ii noise isolating inner ear phones and they not only have a far superior frequency range and sound they do not hurt your ears and also reduce the wind noise in your ears.
Now for the wind noise in the microphone situation.
So what have I done? Well I contacted Scalar about this issue twice and both times they responded asked me about what helmets and then did not respond any further after I explained the issues.
So I installed the smaller mic foam then covered it with cotton wool. To hold the cotton wool and reduce the wind noise I cut two fingers out of an old pair of leather gloves. Cut them to a length slightly longer than the mic foam. After checking where the mic insert is located and would be when the leather glove finger covers it, I removed the leather glove finger and cut a small hole around 5mm dia, using a steel punch on a piece of timber right in the position where I marked the mic insert location.
I then installed the leather glove finger over the cotton wool covered mic foam and held it in position with a cable tie.
After a test ride this has now solved the wind noise issue!
I can still just hear the exhaust under high throttle when the pillion has activated the headset which proves to me the mic gain is set too high in the headsets however this may be solved if you installed a mic gain potentiometer in the mic audio line or we can convince Scalar to revise the firmware and have a greater variations of mic gain or just low ever the mic gain.
I hope you can visualise what I have done
