new to forum, exploring purchase of speed twin. where I ride in US western outback fuel stations may be few/far apart. often no premium and with shared hose on pump you are getting 1/2 gallon of regular if you buy premium anyway which can be a substantial % with smallish fuel tanks. so what does triumph recommend for fuel grade please. thanks! my vstrom and DR eat regular (87 in USA).

Welcome to TT from Eastern Canada.
I always use the high test(premium) in all my bikes. That's 91 octane rating up this way. I find the bike runs better and there is supposed to be no ethanol in it here. Of course you always get a bit when you start as you suggested from the remnants in the hose.
You can always carry a small bottle of octane boost if you find the bike runs poorly on the regular unleaded.

I like the maritimes have spent summers riding around the cabot trail and over to newfie a couple times. only up the western arm in NFLD and a couple days over to Labrador. I like to use regular in my bikes if I can and it's often all that's available so I was curious what triumph recommends in the speed twin 900. in the US we use (R+M)/2. the web translates 91 RON to 87 (R+M)/2. I'm thinking regular is fine but am looking for official specs. sometimes it's listed in the owners manual that comes with the bike. I know many like to use premium.

Sorry, I meant 91 octane rating, not RON. Was looking at another topic and had that on my mind.
Corrected original response.

Glad you've been up this way. The Cabot trail is indeed a great ride.
Myself and maybe 1 or two more are doing the Trans Labrador highway this summer. I am quite familiar with Western Newfoundland and plan on showing my buddies around.

I like the maritimes because it feels like you go through a bit of a time portal and you go back a decade or so. people are friendly. I like to spend a night at meat cove. love the seafood in the maritimes. gotta have me a lobster. watch out for the moose and the coyotes have a reputation too. all the fuel I have access to is ethanol. I tested a sample and it was around 6%.

The owner's manual will specify grade of fuel for your bike. Most Triumphs will take regular 87 Octane up to 15% ethanol, however you may want a cleaner fuel like a mid-grade. It will not matter to power output or emissions, but it will keep the injectors cleaner longer. In high performance motors (like my Speed Triple) it requires higher octane due to the compression ratio, lower compression engines can take faster combustible fuels like 87 octane.

The '24 Speed Twin is 11:1 compression and requires 91 RON or 87 octane or higher.

The owners manual can be read here:

thanks for owners manual! yeah I see in specs regular fuel for the t100/t120. great to know for me. also I've learned that cruise is available for t100.

The Triumph owner's manual mentions "87 or higher". Most owner's put in the most premium grade as it seems there may be a bit more cleaning agents in the higher grade, but remember almost a full gallon of fuel remains in the pump from the last customers selection so you may not be buying just what you think. In humid climate I like to keep it topped up with fuel and usually only get $6 fuel per fill. Somebody out there knows more on this subject so I'll just read on. Interesting topic.

I used 91 Ethanol free. It’s a stand alone hose so I am not getting low grade fuel.
haven't seen ethanol free or separate hoses for a while and some stations are 87 only. my truck, car and bikes are spec'd for 87 up to 10% ethanol. lucky for me my stuff uses 87.
