Irvine woman wants roadside memorial to honor fish killed in truck crash

IRVINE, Calif. – An Orange County woman has asked the city of Irvine to erect a sign honoring hundreds of truck crash victims -- who were fish.
About 1,600 pounds of saltwater bass died on Oct. 11 when a container truck hauling them to market got into a three-way crash.
Dina Kourda, a local volunteer with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wrote the head of street maintenance requesting a sign at the intersection to honor the fish.
Kourda's letter notes that while roadside memorials traditionally honor human beings, she hopes an exception will be made to remind drivers that all animals -- in her words -- "value their lives and feel pain."
Irvine spokesman Craig Reem tells the Los Angeles Times that no memorial is planned.
Celebratory gunfire at Saudi wedding cuts cable, 23 electrocuted
Reuters – 6 hrs ago
RIYADH (Reuters) - Celebratory gunfire at a wedding party in eastern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night brought down an electric cable, killing 23 people, a local civil defense official said.
"At the wedding, the cable fell on a metal door and the 23 people who died were all electrocuted," Eastern Province official Abdullah Khashman said by phone.
A photograph of the aftermath of the accident, published on local newspapers' websites showed a large courtyard strewn with fallen chairs and a pole in the middle supporting cables carrying lightbulbs.
All those killed were from the same tribe, Khashman said. Thirty others were injured in the incident near Abqaiq, a center of the Saudi energy industry.
Saudi Arabia banned the shooting of firearms at weddings, a popular tradition in tribal areas of the conservative Islamic kingdom, last month.
Eastern Province governor Prince Mohammed bin Fahd ordered an investigation into the incident, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

Goats released on NC high school football field
Saturday, October 20, 2012
SHELBY, NC -- A small herd of goats caused plenty of problems for a North Carolina high school hoping to play a home football game on senior night.
The Shelby Star reports that nearly a dozen goats were released in the Burns High School stadium in Cleveland County Thursday night or Friday morning. School officials say the goats caused enough of a mess to force the game against Rutherfordton-Spindale Central to be moved.
The prank raised concern because of a recent outbreak of E. coli cases associated with the Cleveland County Fair west of Charlotte this month. Burns Athletic Director Eddy Taylor said health department officials came to the school and told them the game would have to be moved.
Other activities scheduled at Burns on Friday also had to be moved.

[TD="colspan: 2"] There is a town in Alaska that has had a cat as mayor for 15 years. The cat named Stubbs has been the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska for nearly all of his life -- no joke. It's been that way for more than a decade in the small tourist town that boasts nearly 900 residents.
The part-manx was named honorary mayor shortly after his birth, and now locals all know the cat as "Mayor Stubbs."
"He was just in the Alaska Magazine, and he's been featured in a few different things," said Lauri Stec, who works at Nagley's General Store in Talkeetna, where Stubbs hangs out most of the time.
As the story goes, 15 years ago several of the town residents didn't like the candidates who were running for mayor of Talkeetna, so as a joke, they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs the cat as a write-in candidate, and he actually won.
Now, thanks to Stubbs, local tour guides have a little fun with the thousands of tourists who come through the town each summer.

Toilet stopper: See the soccer goalkeeping loo that's in a league of its own

Super Great Toilet Keeper
This toilet can block soccer kicks at 160 kph.
THE Japanese love of technology and oddball inventions is legendary, but this one is in a league of its own.
A league, perhaps, played in the smallest room of the house.
The Super Great Toiler Keeper is part mechanical loo and part goalie, able to take on the country’s soccer elite while, presumably, being able to provide a nice, strong flush.
In this video, the super loo is pitted against a famous Japanese striker Tatsuhiko ‘Dragon’ Kubo.
The toilet goalkeeper in action.
The toilet uses motion-detecting cameras to calculate the flight of the ball, pivot on its axis, and fire a small ball from the bowl to parry the incoming soccer ball. The toilet goalie is the unlikely result of two Japanese companies with similar names and vastly different products, joining forces.
Toilet maker Toto and sports lottery agent Toto pitched their collaboration as an environmentally friendly project.
The loo pivots and uses motion-sensor technology to fire balls to stop incoming shots
Exactly how "green" is debatable, but it probably seemed like a good idea at the time.
