Hey thats not fair

LOL. Well, it came about because I was laid off due to the recession. The County had to eliminate jobs to meet budget. When that happens, Parks and Recreation and libraries become prime targets since it is politically difficult to cut law enforcement, emergency services and programs for the elderly and teens. The worst part is that our housing went with the job; so we were forced to relocate. We really have to watch our spending; but we find gas money to ride!

Yes, we are OK. It was really tight for a while trying to exist on unemployment compensation and my military retirement. Fortunately, we had no debt; I pay cash for everything. If I don't have the cash, I don't buy.

I was laid off in June of 2008. Our plans were for me to work until July 2010 when I would turn 66 and could work without penalty to my Social Security. We planned to move to Orlando to help take care of my 89 year old dad. The layoff just speeded up our plans by two years. We moved in with my dad in the house I grew up in. It is in the Orlando area. It was country when I grew up; it is city now - and I hate cities.

The county gave me a good severance package and continued or medical coverage for nine months. We just had to tough it out until I could apply for Social Security at age 65. We still have decent medical coverage through the military since I am a military retiree.

My dad is in good health and he still plays golf two days a week; he still drives and does so safely. But there is a lot he can no longer do for himself and he enjoys our company and our help- especially Mae Lyne's cooking. He had gotten taken in a couple of scams from the slime who prey on the elderly and now we are able to steer him clear of those. We are where we need to be and life is good - even if I am stuck in suburbia.

The biggest downside is that I was forced to use a good portion of my savings to survive and I lost a lot of money I had invested for retirement due to the stock market's dive and the collapse of financial institutions.

Carl thats a sad but also a good story. Your dad is very lucky to have you both there to take care of him. It is a privelege too many old folks don't get the chance to have. Enjoy your time together and when it is over you can move out of suburbia knowing that you did what you needed to do. You lost your job at a time when you needed to loose it so that you can spend good quality time with your dad.

I can only hope that my kids will be like you when I'm old and that they will care enough to look after me and not dump me in the cheapest old folks "home" to be visited at christmas. Thank you for that heart warming story, you have just made my day.
