I did a lot of work at one time at a banking security company and I would need to walk past the counting room to get to my equipment. It had huge bullet proof glass windows so the manager could always see in. Man I have not seen so much money in all my life so I could see how the temptation could creep in. Hated going there as they would just about do a strip search on you going in and coming out, also had the armed security guard with me every second I was in there. Terrible feeling to have to work with this guy holding a big gun watching every move you make BGRIN

Dave, they don't do that to all of the technical people, just the shady looking ones. :y15:

[h=1]Armored Truck Shooting Update: Suspect Stashed $20K at Grandmother’s Grave, Manhunt Continues[/h]
The manhunt continues for Kenneth Konias Jr., a 22-year armored truck driver who, police say, shot his partner and fled with $2.3 million dollars. And although authorities have kept silent about the murder and the missing cash, new information regarding Konias’ disappearance has come to light.

Of the missing $2.3 million, Konias left behind more than $200,000 for his family, according to news sources. Konias called his mother after he allegedly shot Michael Haines, 31, and told her she should “go see grandma.” Sources say that the 22-year old stashed $20,000 at his grandmother’s grave and left another $200,000 at his parent’s house.

Police say they found Haines’ body in the back of the armored vehicle, which was idling under a bridge in Pittsburghs’ Strip District.

“This is a premeditated murder,” Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said last week. “Our belief is that he planned to rob the company and if he had to kill the guard then he planned to do that. He shot the guy from close range in the back of the head to accomplish the robbery. That’s pretty cold.”

Apparently, Konias‘ mother wasn’t the only person he called after he allegedly shot Haines. He also called a friend, according to the criminal complaint.

“What? Did you kill someone?” the friend asked.

“Yes,” Konias answered, adding that he had enough cash to live on for the rest of his life. Apparently, Konias also asked his friend about extradition laws in both Canada and Mexico.

The armored truck company that employed both Haines and Konias, Garda Cash Logistics, is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Konias’ arrest.

UPDATE:
Pittsburgh Armored Car Heist Suspect Caught With Loot In Pompano Beach, Florida

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – The armored car guard charged with killing his partner and making off with millions in cash in a Pittsburgh robbery was arrested in Pompano Beach, Florida early Tuesday, apparently the victim of bragging about his crime to others who ratted him out.

Members of the South Florida FBI Violent Crimes task force took Ken Konias into custody without incident Tuesday morning, recovering up to $1.5 million in stolen cash and two guns, one of which is believed to be the service weapon he allegedly used to kill his partner as part of the scheme.

Investigators said Konias admitted who he was when he was arrested and cooperated with police, telling them where the money was located and giving up his weapons. Before is capture, Konias had eluded police for seven weeks despite billboards and even a story on America’s Most Wanted.

“We also considered that he may have took his own life because of what he did and what he got himself involved in,” said Pittsburgh Detective Peg Sherwoood.

Konias was arrested and taken to federal court, where in his first appearance Tuesday he appeared, bound and looking tired, and waived his right to a detention hearing. This means he will likely be returned to the Pittsburgh area for his arraignment.

Konias indicated he would be represented in Pennsylvania by high-powered defense attorney Charles R. LoPresti.

At a Pittsburgh news conference investigators said they got their break when someone called the Pittsburgh police department Monday night and said Konias could be found at a home on SW 8th street in Pompano Beach.

Investigators said he had driven to Florida from Pittsburgh some time after the robbery, after leaving about a quarter-million dollars from the robbery at a gravesite and his parents home. That money, investigators said, was recovered.

It was after arriving in South Florida that Konias apparently made his major mistake.

“He encountered several individuals he confided in regarding his criminal activity in the Pittsburgh area,” Michael Rodriguez with the FBI in Pittsburgh, which resulted in the tip that led to his arrest.

Initial reports said the arrest was made in a “crackhouse”, but investigators said “There’s not a case where anyone was using drugs inside the residence right now, but we’re still looking into it.”

Konias, who was featured in a March episode of “America’s Most Wanted,” allegedly shot his partner Michael Haines in the back of the head while inside the back of the armored truck they operated together for Garda Cash Logistics.

The murder and theft took place Feb. 28th and Konias has been the target of a nationwide manhunt ever since.

The Garda Company, operators of the armored car to which Konias was assigned, offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to Konias arrest.

Investigators said it’s still too early to talk about who, if anyone, will qualify for that reward.

AJ, will he be tried by PA or will he be tried on federal charges?

If he had kept his big mouth shut, he would still be free. I am glad he is behind bars; his young life is over. Stupidity.

He's going to be extradited to Pennsylvania to face whatever charges they file here. I am not sure about any possible federal charges....I know bank robbery is federal and I assume an armored car robbery is too.

I hope he gets the death penalty so you folks won't have to support him for the next 60 years.

I agree ... as long as all doubt is removed and he did it. We can only comment on media reports and they are telling the story that sells the most papers. 12 of his fellows will decide.

Florida gives the condemned a choice between the electric chair or lethal injection. Since the choice began, all have chosen lethal injection. ""Ol Sparky" sits unused.

I haven't been following this thread so decided to take a look and catch up since it's been going on so long.
Words almost fail me. What a complete and utter idiot!!!!!! There was no way in hell that he could ever expect to get away with that!!!
He ruined his own life and severely hurt the family and friends of the man he shot - and for what!!!
If he had come up here we would have been more than happy to throw him back across the border.
But then our mamby pamby government has been known to balk at sending a criminal back to a state with the death penalty. Not so if it was up to me.
Hanging is too good for him!!!

Although we've only executed 3 people since 1976, there have been 6 people on Death Row who were released when DNA showed they were innocent.

One of those people was a local man who was accused of killing a whole family. He was not mentally stable and was convicted on his own admission that he did it, even though it's now been proven he didn't. You've got to be nuts to admit to murdering a whole family when you didn't do it!

I think it good when people who've been sentenced to death get released like that. You certainly don't want to execute the wrong person!

I agree, there's a lot to be said for that. DNA has released some convicted people and I'm all for that.
It only stands to reason that innocent people have been executed.
The guy in this thread hasn't been tried yet, but there doesn't seem to be much doubt of his guilt.

Yeah.....it seems to be a pretty open and shut case.

He was caught with some of the money and told the police where it was. He was also caught with the murder weapon.

I'm not sure how you'd squirm your way out of that!?
