I know this is a motorcycle forum, so this is off-topic, but I'm looking for any input:

Winter is fast approaching (it was 37F this morning) in the NE - USA.

My Wife's Jaguar is AWD and is equipped with low-profile high performance street tires (Continental 255-45 R17). These tires are great in the dry and wet, but horrible in snow.

Therefore, I'm looking for a set of 4 winter-only tires. I don't want to invest a fortune in tires that are only used a portion of the year. At the same time I don't want junk and I want tires that really do perform well in the snow. At this size, practically everything is expensive anyhow.

What I'm looking at buying are Federal Himalaya WS2 or WS1 winter tires. They are much cheaper than the big names like Michelin, etc. From what I've read online, they are an excellent alternative with good ratings in hazardous conditions.

Does anyone here have any experience or know of anyone who's had these tires before?

It's a good thing Florida doesn't have snow. They overturn their cars left and right anytime it just rains. That and they must give anyone a license to drive there.....I never saw so many geriatrics that shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car than in Florida.

lol, sounds like where I live, too many retirement villages around.
Back on topic tho, I know a lot of boy racers use Federal tyres cos there cheap,
just how well they handle tho, god only knows cos they tend to crash their cars regardless.

I've always stuck with good tyres regardless of cost, they help to keep the shiny side up.

Their winter tires are rated just as good as the expensive ones...in fact better in many categories.

I do have expensive tires for the summer already, but it doesn't make that much sense to spend a bundle on winter tires.

AJ, you are right about the rain - but those aren't Floridians flipping over. We Floridians know how to drive in the rain - and slow down. And you are so right about the geriatric set.

When it first starts raining, the oil and grease on the highway floats on the rain water making the road super slippery. When it rains hard and long enough to wash the gunk from the road, everything is fine. Around Orlando on I-4, it is like bumper cars at the fair when it begins to rain.

I got those tires mounted it seems just in time.......it's SNOWING!

Predictions are 1-3 inches by morning (depending on your elevation) with already about .75 inches on the ground already.

Please keep the white stuff up there. It's just raining here.

Funny world, you get snow, we have early summer and the boys are digging my pool, about 3 weeks to finish. I just had a phone call from a mate at the Phillip Island GP, hot sun full blast.
