The wonderfull SANRAL is busy building these gantries accross our new highways which will enable them to bill us 50 c per/km to use the roads.
I want to know how they intend to stop all the crooks using the roads?.All the law abiding Public are going to subsidise these bastards. The next thing that will happen is our secondary roads will become clogged up and even more damaged.
They also say bikes will be charged the same amount ?

Ist world system in a 3 rd world country .I smell a rat ( ha ha )

Anyone have more insight to put my mind at ease?

By the way if you live in JHB and work in Pretoria you will fork out R 1020 pm!!!!!!!

Harty, if it is any consolation, here in the USA, motorcycles generally pay the same tolls as do the cages. I think it sucks; but that is the way it is. The only upside is that bikes are allowed to use the carpool lanes which is a plus in the metro areas.

Hi Carl
The billing of m/bikes the same amount is a side issue. My main complaint is that a vast majority of people driving on our roads will crook the system .They don't have fixed addresses or bank accounts .They are not legally on the road in the first place. So I will be funding them

Only 25 % of cars on our roads are even Insured so trying to get them to pay tolls without a tollgate is going to be almost impossible

Everyone will need to have a tag that linked to either a pre paid account or a credit card.Pay first and fight later

I did not realize there would be no toll gates. YOu are right, simply relying on scanners, only the honest and businesses will pay. Here in the States, they have toll booths. They usually have two or three lanes at the tool booths with only only scanners for prepaid passes. One does not even need to slow down in those lanes. If you run through the scanner without a prepaid pass and transponder, you get a photo taken of your vehicle and license tag. The State will send you a bill in the mail for the cost of the toll. If you have not paid that in 30 days, they will find you and then there is a whopping fine. Many times there is a cop at these major toll booths who will run offenders down on the spot - and they get that whopping fine, especially if they have obscured their license tags, which is an additional fine. It ends up costing over $200 USD as opposed to a $2.00 to $5.00 dollar toll. I have a prepaid transponder that I can move to either of our cages or bikes.
