Let me start this post out by saying as of today I know very little about motorcycles, I haven’t ridden one if over 20 years and even then my time was very limited on a bike, but have always loved them and wanted a nice bike.

When I was in my early 20′s I was given a Honda 750 that had been sitting in a barn for awhile and with the help of a friend (a lot of help from the friend, basically all I did was polish the chrome) we got it up and running to my dads dismay. My guess is that my dad had a close call on his bike. He had one while we were in grade school then one day just came home and said he was selling the bike and never rode again. Then made me promise not to own one while he was still alive. So once we got the Honda running to honor my fathers wishes I sold the bike to the friend who really got it up and running for basically just the money we put into it to get it running again.
Fast forward to the present, I was helping my father-in-law clean out their old house in Iowa and found this old Triumph in his garage. It had been sitting their since 1981. He doesn’t remember why he quite riding it. Most likely because he got a Goldwing. Not sure what type of shape it is all in but I offered to buy it from him but he told me to just take it and get it running if I could. So this started a new project for me and has ignited a passion about motorcycles once again and the history of the classic Triumph Tridents.
This blog will document the restoration of this motorcycle. What I learn about the history of the Triumph Trident and links to other sites, forums, and pictures related to the Triumph or biking in general.

Welcome to the forum from the Sunshine State and another classic Triumph enthusiast. Thanks for posting the pic. That is a very good looking Trident.

Please feel free to post any questions you have in our Classics section. We have some real experts here including GrandPaul who restores bikes for a living. I have never owned a Trident; so other than basics, I can't be of much help. I will be following your project on the blog and request that you start a thread a keep us updated here also. I wish you the best with your project and hope that you will be riding soon.

Your daughter is a lovely young lady! TUP

Re: Newbie here with a 1975 Triumph Trident that needs a lot of work to get running a

Thanks all for the welcome. I am sure I will be posting some questions shortly. I am talking with a local bike shop to work with on helping me getting her up and running. I just hope my father-in-law can find his old title otherwise we have to deal with a bunch of red tape to get her registered for the road.

Hello and welcome from Australia. You have a fantastic motorcycle there and a great helper!
The engine number identifies your T160 as a December 1975 build which is near the end of production of the T160's.

If the engine has not been run for 31 years, great care must be taken to commission it, especially where the engine oil is concerned. My T160 had not been started for 37 years (since the factory test run) and the previous owner had it commissioned by a Trident specialist.

If I can be of assistance please feel free to ask. You have a family treasure there.......including your helper.

A couple of photos of my T160. All standard as delivered from the factory with the exception of the oil pressure gauge and tyres.

Enjoy your project. The end result is a motorcycle which is a joy to ride.

Thanks Sea Dog. I believe I am lucky and have found a bike shop just miles from my house that specializes in working on old bikes and has several Triumphs under their belts. So I am hoping this is going to work out well and it will be ready to ride by spring. Fingers crossed.

If you cannot locate the title. Here is the link to a legitimate title service. I have done business with them twice for car titles. The process is entirely legal.

Thanks Carl. Fortunately since I received this bike from my Father-in-law, I think we are going to be able to submit a form to the Iowa DMV and get a new title sent to him that he can then transfer over to me. Hopefully it will be that easy.
