New to me anyway. Wednesday evening, I traded my 2000 Ford F-350, crewcab, diesel, 4X4 dually for a 2011 F-450, diesel, 4X4, dually with 76,000 miles/122,310 kilometers. My 2000 was a second level trim and accessory package. I was a work truck. My new truck is Lariat, the next to the top of the line in trim packages and accessories. So far, I am getting 14-15 miles per gallon in the city vs, 11-12 with my 2000. I am on the road now; thus I will know what kind of fuel mileage I get on the highway.

This new truck has all kinds of bells and whistles. The 6.7L V8 turbodiesel engine is much stronger than the 7.3L in my 2000. It produces 390 horsepower and 735 ft/pounds of torque @ 1600rpm . It will pull a load. The transmission is a six speed automatic with manual mode. It automatically gears down when stopping to greatly aid stopping a heavy load.

Standard features: Block heater, auto-locking hubs, power heated mirrors with turn indicators, front tow hooks, trailer hitch receiver, chrome grille, air conditioning, heated/cooled leather seats, cruise control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, auto-dimming rear mirror, front and rear under-seat storage, trailer brake controller, AM/FM/CD player with MP3 capability, cargo box light, outside temperature display, tire pressure monitor.

Options: 6.7L diesel, electronic 4X4 and off-road package, navigation system, power folding and telescoping mirrors, tow package including fifth wheel mounting, power locks, electric sliding rear window, electric moon roof, and more. It has five 12volt DC outlets and one 120 AC outlet (inverter).

This should be the last truck I buy in my life time.

Thanks, Dave, BonnieD, and AJ.

AJ, it does have the liquid (urea) exhaust additive. I added 2.5 gallons yesterday. I will see how long that lasts as I don't know much about this system.

that's a nice truck Carl you lucky devil ! I really like that im a big ford fan always have been :y154:.
with that millage and diesel I think it would last me out never mind you :y2: I hope it serves you well.

What's this exhaust additive thing?

The additive is an aqueous urea solution blended with 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. DEF solution is used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to lower NO[SUB]X[/SUB] concentration in the exhaust of diesel engines.

Nice truck Carl, it matches your Tiger. TUP

It's a PITA is what it is.

It's bad enough they make you mortgage your house to but a tank of diesel that costs 1/4 as much to produce as gasoline. Now you have to buy an expensive additive to inject into your exhaust system on top of that.

Thanks, Rocky, Shane and Doug. So I far, it is the best truck I have owned. I had on the road yesterday for about 125 miles. I averaged 17.3 mpg. The average included a little bit of city driving. I would have gotten around 15 mpg on my old truck. Looking at the instant file economy, I get better then 18 mpg at 60 miles per hour and 17 mpg at 65 mpg.

Diesel exhaust fluid has been used in Europe for several years. It was mandated in the US by the EPA beginning in 2011. It works with an exhaust system device to remove nitrogen particulates form the exhaust. It is 67.5% water and 32.5% urea. Here is a video explaining it. Basically it is a way to cost consumers more money.

Thanks Adrian, It is wonderful on the road. It rides a bit rough empty as to be expected with a truck this heavy duty. When I put the fifth wheel hitch in the bed, it helped the ride. With about 800 pounds in the bed, the ride is great. The 4X4 front end is wider than than any other Ford pickup; but it has a shorter turning radius than my F-350 and Is about the same as my wife's 2012 Ram 1500. It should help in maneuvering the 40' toyhauler.
