MotOz Tractionator RallZ tyres review - Big grip for big landscapes!

Trying to find the perfect tyres for your bike is always a problem. Whether you are looking for road tyres for your sports bike or off-road rubber for your dirt bike there’s a bewildering array of choices out there. For an adventure bike you are looking for a tyre that will offer great grip on the rough stuff, but still allow you to cover big distances at speed when you are on the blacktop. We’ve been hearing good things about MotOz tyres, and when we were looking to take on the UK leg of the Trans Euro Trail – TET – on a KTM 690 Enduro R we needed some tyres with a bit more capabilities than the stock Mitas E07s. So that’s when we reached for a set of the MotOz Tractionator RallZ tyres.

But would they be any good?

THE REAR IS AVAILABLE IN 17 OR 18 INCH TUBED and 18 INCH TUBELESS
CHUNKY MONKEY

So the first thing that you notice when the MotOz Tractionator RallZ tyres arrive in the post is that although they look fairly chunky in the images on the Adventure Spec website – from where we’d got the tyres – in the flesh they are even more so. These babies look almost like full on knobblies just with a slightly more road based profile. But hell – these look like they are going to grip like an angry pitbull!

And it’s not just the rear – the front is much the same too with a slightly wider block gap than the rear.

So what type of bike are the MotOz RallZ tractionator tyres designed for? Well the website suggest that they are best for big single cylinder trail/ adventure bikes up to around 150 kilos, so our KTM 690 Enduro R was bang on target. The chaps at Adventure Spec has actually recommended this tyre for this bike rather than the Tractionator Extreme Hybrids that some colleagues had been using on smaller capacity bikes because of it’s tougher construction and ability to cope with the larger horsepower of the 690. The tubeless rear tyre is actually a tougher construction, so this can be used on bigger twin cylinder bikes

BLOCK PARTY

So the RallZis desigbed for riders that want a bit more off-road grip than thatprovided by the companies existing Tractionator Adventure hoop. The tyres have a unique tread block pattern that offers both exceptional traction on the dirt but also relatively long life thanks to a self-protecting design. In comparison to the Adventure tyre , the RallZ will have around 2/3 to 3/4 the life span which seems reasonable for the increased grip off the road.

The tyre is made from a mix of synthetic and natural compounds to acheive the required grip even in the super-hot conditions in the companies home in Australia/

The tyres’s carcass is some 25% tougher than other adventures tyres which should help reduce the possibility punctures out on the trail. And when it comes to those knobbies – the tread depth is an incredible 30% more than most of its competitors. That’s a lot of potential grip right there!

FIT FARM

So with the tyres delivered we took the bike iover to Classic Enduro for fitting. OK we could just about do this ourself, but with Adventure Spec also including some incredibly thick ultra heavy duty tubes as ordered, it seemed a better option to hand it over to a professional!

Despite their relatively hard carcass, the tyres weren’t too tricky to fit and sat onto the bead well from the off. Inflated to around 20 psi to start with they were good to go for both road and trail. We could always adjust up or down once we’d got the feel of them.

BENDS FOR FOUR MILES - YES PLEASE!

Now although we needed the tyres to work well on the road, the TET that we were going to be riding is around 60% tarmac. Any tyre choice needed to offer good grip on the black stuff and do it without the awful drumming that you can get with some dual sport tyres.

We’re pleased to report that the MotOz Rally Z delivers exactly what we wanted. It’s super stable on the KTM 690 Enduro R up to 80 mph which is about as fast as we’d ever want to push anything with this deep a tread pattern. And the tyres also perform well on the bends, with very stable manners even when cranked over at speed, thanks to the radiused profile and close knobbie pattern on the edges of the tyre

In terms of wear, at the end of a 500 mile trip, there was little if any sign of wear, despite some really gnarly trails and long road sections. For a tyre with this much grip, this is quite an achievement.

ROUGH RIDE

THE MOTOX TYRES GRIP WELL IN BIG LANDSCAPES

But enough of that tarmac stuff, what we really want is to leave that behind and head to the hills and these hoop are going to be pretty damn good for doing just that. We’d ridden for around 300 miles off -road on the stock Mitas tyres and although they were OK on the dry stuff and rock, they really didn’t do so well when it got muddy and snotty. Not so the RallZ, as they coped with everything we threw at them and excelled. Rocky climbs – no problems, muddy rutted lanes – easy stuff, flat out dirt roads – bring it on!

Of course the bike was helping the tyres too as the 690 has a pretty damn smart traction control system and between these tyres and the electronic trickery, the back wheel never stepped out of line on even the most testing of climbs. Even stopping on a rock slab and restarting wouldn’t phase the bike, the MotOz hoops are as grippy as the Maxxis Trial Maxx we use on our KTM EXC250 and we like that a lot!

POWRRING THROUGH THE MUD, THE MOTOZ TYRES HOOK UP LIKE A BOSS
APPEARANCE

We liked the look of the MotOz Tractionator RallZ from the start and on the bike they look suitably purposeful and effective. But luckliy it’s not just good looks, the tyres perform well too!

DURABILITY

Getting a compromise between grip and longevity is something all bike owners are looking for and MotOz have managed thids with the RallZ. It’s soft enough to grip wet rocks but shows little wear after big miles

GRIP

Whether on or off road, these tyres offer great grip. On the tarmac they inspire confidence even on fast corners, and away from the blacktop they are extremely impressive on any surface you choose.

VALUE

Again a massive five out of five for the Aussies hoops. With the front at £65 and the rear at £85 in the UK, that’s champagne tyres for beer money . Add another £57 is you want the 4mm UHD inner tubes both ends

RIDE EXPEDITIONS VERDICT - MOTOZ TRACTIONATOR RALLZ TYRES

Given that some tyres promise much and deliver far less, we are seriously impressed the the MotOz Tractionator RallZ. Pitched at a modest price point, the tyres deliver exceptional performance both on the road and on the trail. And given that MotOz is such a small company compared to giants like Michelin or Pirelli, we think that’s all the more impressive. Give them a go – if you are in the UK then Adventure Spec will hook you up
