I did not want to hijack AJ's thread on Man's Best Friend https://www.triumphtalk.com/threads/mans-best-friend.29705/ as that was a great thread. Seco is an awesome dog and will be a great help for Lauri once he is released from the hospital.

Service dogs have been around for ages but most people only see them as Guide Dogs for the Blind. There is so many other service dogs that fill a ton of other jobs. They, dogs, can truly be more than just friends or even more than Man's Best Friend.

Diabetic Alert

Disability Service

PTSD

Hospital Caregiver

Allergen Alert Dogs

One problem however is there is no standardization in the USA of service dogs. People can get a service dog for almost anything and then demand they are allowed in places. Some agencies claim to train dogs but do a poor job.

Some don't really match the people to the dog very well either.

There are places on the internet where you buy a vest and get a certificate that you use with any dog!

Canine Companions is a great service dog nonprofit that is reputable: http://www.cci.org/site/c.cdKGIRNqEmG/b.3978475/k.3F1C/Canine_Companions_for_Independence.htm

They talk about 'fake' service dogs and have a letter writing campaign here:

When I see people with their service dogs I always am amazed at the bond between the two of them. It must be heartbreaking for them when they lose their dog more so than what it is for us I would think.

My brother has a service dog (from Canine Companions). I am absolutely positive that if Aragon (the dog) passed away, my brother would soon follow. When Aragon needed minor surgery, my brother worried more about his dog then I ever saw him care about me or our parents!

In the credits at the back of his book, he thanks his wife, his son, and Aragon (!) before he mentions me - his only brother!!!
