Well they sure do make junk these days that is for sure.

About 6 months ago we purchased a new BENNETT READ 2000W Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner and I thought being German for once I had a good product. Today while doing the cleaning it just stopped working and that was that. This one also was not that cheap as I wanted to get something that lasted, so much for that.

Back in the 80's when I moved into my own apartment and had nothing I purchased a Frigidaire Stove and this is what we used all the time and every day to cook on. When we moved into our house 17 years ago it already had a stove so I put our one in the apartment that we built for the in-laws. Over the years all I have done is replace fuses and I think one of the cooking plates and it is still going strong.

The stove that came with the house had to be replaced as well last year so that lasted 17 years I suppose. So when I was replacing that stove I thought seeing the one in the apartment was a bit old I should also replace that. Well when I mentioned this to the mother-in law she did not want to hear anything about replacing her good old trusted stove, so that one is still going today. It also still looks just about new and you would never say it was more than a few years old.

Most appliance repairmen will tell you that modern appliances don't have half the life of the older appliances.
That said, I have to say that my appliances have given me great longevity - knock on wood.

I am also finding just normal furniture does not last and we are not heavy on that when it comes to wear and tear but it still just falls apart, and that is also not cheap these days.

Hi, Dave: Does it have a reset button? There's probably some sort of sensor for a full canister, which will shut it down. It could even have a clogged passage, sending a false "full" signal. I'm guessing that you've already done these checks, but it never hurts to ask.
Don't ask the "village idiot" how he knows these things: Jim

D, you got that right on old appliances, when my wife's grand mother died i got her refrigerator, it is a 1964 model, still runs great, did not not come with "frost free" nor a recirlating fan, keeps beer cold! When it goes out i probably will use the compressor out of it to make a vacuum machine.

Now that I think about it I had a refrigerator that my brother gave me when I moved into my first place in the 80's, when he gave it to me he had had it a good few years. Well some years back I thought we were due for an upgrade so I purchased a Samsung Double Door, only had that for a short time and the door seals started leaking so we had ice build-up around the outside of the doors. They can and replaced the rubber seals on warranty I don't know how many times and could not fix it. So eventually they did a buy back so I could replace it with another model, that ran for a bit before it also started giving problems so when I contacted them I get the story "Oh sorry that one is out of warranty". I say that is impossible we just got it not that long ago, so it seems the warranty period was calcultaed on the first one I purchased. So I had to pay to have than one fixed they also came back a few times and it still is not working as it should so now we just use it as it is.

Back onto the vacuum cleaner I was in the shopping mall the other day and passed a shop that does home appliances so I popped in to see what they had, just about every one was a funny name brand and looked like a kids toy so I passed. I still have not really had a good look at the one that stopped working so I might do that this weekend.

Well I was at one of our main shopping complexes today so I thought I would have a look and see what vacuum cleaners they had. I found the Prince of Darkness (Bosch) so as this is a well known brand and I was there I got it.

Hope it holds out and performs for you.
Buying anything new in appliances these days is NOT as it was 15-20 years ago.
They don't build 'em like they used to.
Maybe they should start again.

That Bennett Read looks like somebody tried to reinvent the vacuum. Beware of such 'great ideas'. But look around for a button to push. Sometimes there's a fuse that trips, especially if you catch a piece of rug, or the unit gets too hot.

We've had German Shepherds since 1980. We used to buy a new department store vacuum every year because they couldn't handle it. Then we discovered Miele. Our first one lasted 30 years and last year we replaced it with another Miele. Yes, sometimes something would just wear out from so many years of use ( hose, connectors, power head motor ) and it would need service but with Miele everything is replaceable and they support it for what seems forever.

This is interesting, when I first moved to France in 2000 I thought I would buy a new boxed drill bit set, bought Bosch at a premium price, first time used realised they were rubbish, took a closer look at the box,yup made in China.
More recently bought a good looking Sekonda watch, for some reason imagined they were made in Russia, watch is fine bit whilst cleaning the case noticed, movement made in Japan, assembled in China.
Dave, maybe that machine was made in China,I don't have a problem with China but the quality is often a little below what we should expect from a NAMED brand that we would possibly expect more from.Just a thought.
