This is Memorial Day weekend and Monday, May 30th is the official Memorial Day holiday set aside to remember those who lost their lives in service to our nation and those veterans who have passed on since their time of service. It is a time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and to be thankful for the freedoms they bought and paid for by their blood. I salute all of those who have died in the service of their respective nations no matter what uniform they wore.

Freedom is a lot things. But there is one thing freedom is not; it is not free.

Well said.

My thoughts and prayers for those that served, are serving and those that will serve in the future.

A special prayer for those that paid the ultimate price for us.

Yep, and to think the way they throw the word hero around in the news media. These are the real ones. Especially sad these days when so many have to pay the ultimate price because our govt will let our own guys die by the truckload to keep one arab from dying accidentally so as not to bring the wrath of political correctness down upon them. That just makes thier deaths so much more tragic IMO. Sorry, didn't want to break the silence of mourning with an angry rant, but that really eats me up.

In memorial to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those veterans who served and passed-on since.....

I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.

[FONT=tahoma, verdana, arial]When you awaken in the morning's hush.
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there;
I did not die.

I agree; it is sad. But I have seen a growing awareness of the true meaning over the last four or five years. The media is giving it more coverage and specially the sports channels. The lack of knowledge about Memeorial Day is a sad commentary of our government school systems.

Yes....that's true. When I was in school, we did special Memorial Day presentations and had to learn poems like In Flanders Fields

My Dad always started Memorial Day with a small family flag raising ceremony in our front yard. If the school didn't teach you, he made sure you knew!

Today, Mae Lyne and I rode to St Augustine. It is about 94 miles one way. We put fresh flags on Justin's grave and had a short ceremony. We bought a bundle of stick flags and places them on the graves of every veteran who did not have a flag. More than half of the vets graves had flags. I found two WWI vets' graves and placed flags on them.

Carl & Mae Lyne:

That's a fine thing you do keeping Justin's gravesite updated and tidy. The flags and the solar powered light are awesome!

I'm rather surprised that there are any Veteran's graves missing flags. That's something here is coordinated by the local VA Office, the Boy Scouts, and the VFW & American Legion.
