Yes indeed....lest we forget.
Let's pause for a moment and remember the fallen who gave their lives so we can live free and enjoy the life we have today.
Unfortunately, our young men and women are still giving their lives on foreign soil. It's all such a shame!

I lost both of my parents this year, God rest their souls. They were both veterans of WWII. Every day more of the few remaining vets of that era pass on. We will always owe them so much. And they are terribly missed.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We were watching a hockey game on TV last evening and my Daughter asked me why the two coaches were wearing "little red flowers" on their lapels.

When I was a kid, we had to memorize that poem in school around Veteran's Day (which was called Armistice Day back then).

Better add this flag too gromit:

:y67:

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn

.....afraid I don't remember the whole thing.

I don't mean to be critical, but by golly, this is VETERANS DAY, not Memorial Day!

THANK YOU, MEN & WOMEN, who served, and who are serving in the armed forces at home and abroad.

From a peacetime squid ('75 - '79)

P.S. FREE GRUB at Chili's Applebee's & Subway today, and Golden Corral on Monday.

God bless and BRING 'EM HOME!

The reason I made that statement is that I prefer to CELEBRATE Veteran's day! I believe it should be joyous, and congratulatory. A time of fellowship and thanks to every veteran we can find (and it shouldn't only be like that on Veteran's Day, either).

Memorial Day is a much more somber time, the mood is solemn, and our focus is remembrance, reflection, and outgoing to the survivors (also shouldn't be limited to one day a year).

I'm sorry if my post was misunderstood, but I am UPLIFTED on Veteran's Day, and seek to lift up all the vets and active duty military members around me as well.

I concur, GP. And every time I see a veteran or someone currently serving, I thank him/her for their service.

I always intercept the waitresses and grab the bills for anyone in uniform at any restraunt where I am. One time, I headed these two uniformed officers off at the cash register and they tried to say it wasn't necessary, but I persisted; next thing you know, SEVEN MORE officers came out from the back dining area! Yowch. I didn't flinch. It turned out they were all the top brass of the Texas National Guard and local Border Patrol unit that were discussing joint operations; the full bird handed me a mission coin, a VERY NICE mission coin. I've added it to my collection (5 now, 2 from Kevin)

The thing is that November 11th is Veteran's Day in the USA, but it is Remembrance Day in the UK and all the British Commonwealth nations
The US no longer seems to observe the poppy as the symbol for that day, but they do.

..............Just keeping in mind that it's an International forum.
