Lemon Juice Boiling Amal Carbs (not crabs, carbs)

I heard some time ago about the 'Eco-friendly' way of cleaning Carbs by boiling them in lemon juice. Well, being the inquisitive guy that I am, I made my way over to our local Canadian Tire Store, bought a $20 Salton hotplate, four 32oz dollar store bottles of lemon juice and hauled out an old stainless steel champagne bucket that I scooped at a church rummage sale. Anyway, two bottles of lemon juice and an equal amount of water, turned the hotplate way up and waited for a nice rolling boil. In went a pair of rather yucky looking 1966 Amal 389/203 carb bodies. I let them bubble away for about 15 minutes, hooked them back out and immediately dunked them in to some warm water in a plastic bin right beside the 'cauldron'. Wow, did they ever look good. I then blew out all passages with compressed air and set them in my benchtop media blasting booth. Now, don't get the wrong idea. A while back I went into our local TSC store which is a farm supply outlet and got me a 25kg bag of feed grade sodium bicarbonate powder. You just wouldn't imagine how splendid the results are. Ever try soda blasting? Do it, it'll wow you for sure. All of this is totally environmentally okay. When I get a minute I'll post a couple of photos of these 'like new' Amals. I've got quite a selection of them and now that I know that this works like a charm, I'll just have at it in earnest.

Good post, Bill. I wonder if vinegar would do the same. It is the acid that does the trick. I had never thought of blasting with sodium bicarbonate. I have used it to clean with.
