Kindle - Nice Idea

Although I still love the feel of a real book, I do love my Kindle - it's easily portable, doesn't tear, has a built in reading light................lots about it to like. But I found this little feature on Amazon today that I think is a great idea!

For those who have friends abroad but you'd like to send a gift to, it's not always easy. But now on Amazon, if you know your friend has a Kindle and you have their email address, you can buy a book for them online and have it sent straight to their Kindle, and you can add a little message or greeting for them!

For me, this is perfect - I can't always send gifts abroad because sending from SA is a bit of dicey situation - our postal workers pillage outgoing and incoming packages! So often, it's either too expensive to send a gift abroad or it just never arrives.

I've just spent about an hour sending 'books' to about 10 friends abroad! And they received the notification email within 10 mins of sending! And it can be downloaded onto an iPad or Tab! How cool is that!!!!

I have a Nook and I love it. I appreciate the back light. Once I have bought a book, I can share that book with friends and vice versa. I have a couple of subscription magazines on it; so I always have something to read.

Gromit, what a terrible situation with your postal service!!!
I bought my wife an electronic book last year and it came with 100 books installed.
She read most of them and then more or less lost interest in it.
She really prefers a real book which we buy at a discount, and free shipping, from Amazon Canada.

Rocky, you won't believe our postal system. FS ordered Triumph kit off a UK website. When it arrived here, you could see the package had been opened and resealed and the leather riding jacket was missing. The t-shirts were there though. Xmas is the worst time for package pilfering.

Anyway, I also love my hard copy books but the kindle is great for holidays. I normally read about 12 books on our Dec holidays so the kindle is perfect. 12 books are heavy and take a lot of packing space. Kindle fits in my handbag :-)

I find that postal situation shocking.
Over here I guess we're so used to good and reasonably honest service, but then our postal workers are very well paid and properly supervised.
I've been a mail order shopper for years and even more so now with the internet.
I'm certain I have never had a parcel go missing or pilfered. I do know that the customs people sometimes open packages to verify what's inside - especially after 9/11, but I think that has eased.
On occassion, the post office has delivered a package that was repackaged by them because the box or wrapping was damaged along the way and there is always a letter or note explaining what and why they did it.
Sorry if I hijacked the thread.

I too prefer a real book. But when traveling back and forth, waiting in a doctors office, etc, the Nook works out fine. As Gromit says, it doesn't take much space and I can carry a slew of books and magazines in it.

Yeah, I can see the advantage in that.
These electronic gadgets certainly are amazing!

I've got the Kindle app on my phone and I've used it a couple times. I got it for camping trips or when stuck waiting somewhere. The only problem of having it for use while waiting is the fact I keep forgetting I have it.

Posting with Tapatalk for iPhone.

I have the kindle app of my iPad and I love it. I prefer the feel of a real book but I pretty much only use ebooks now because they are so convenient. I have all of my journal articles I need to read for school on it plus a ton of books on mine....saves me carrying stacks of paper and books around with me, it is great. Didn't know you could have books sent to friends, what a great idea...might have to do that for my boyfriend as he love his kindle.
