Recently, there was a thread running here about a lube shop leaving an old oil filter cartridge O-ring in place and causing a serious leak after the new one was fitted.
When I restored my '70 T100S I fitted a full flow spin-on oil filter kit up under the gearbox out of sight. The other day when I was changing the oil and prepping the bike for winter storage I had considerable trouble braking the oil filter cartridge loose. It had been in place for well over a year, but finally broke free.
I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when I looked at it, but when I took the new cartridge out to install it I realized that the old cartridge didn't have an O-ring. Sure enough, it was still stuck to the mounting head

I pulled it off and Bob's your uncle - and lesson learned.
From now on I'll be more vigilant when changing oil on my bikes.
