A lot goes into these waterproof outfits, I must admit I just purchase the cheap ones when I do as I normally look at them as being done after a few times.
The first time I ever owned any type of rain gear was probably when I purchased the Triumph back in 2006 and this was only because I knew I would be riding most times with the wife on the back. Before that it was the normal leather jacket and jeans and way back then we had rain in winter that would last weeks on end. If I needed to go someplace the rain never was a factor just jump on the bike and ride.
I'm a chicken and only ride locally when I know the weather will be fine.
But I have been on road trips and rode in lots of rain and was prepared for that.
In 1999, a friend and I rode to Massachusetts for a Triumph rally weekend and it rained on the way down and on the way back so we were in rain gear half the time.
The last rally I was returning from I could see the rain in the distance and had a rain suite in my gear but stopping and unpacking it seemed to be such a mission I continued thinking that I might get around it before it hit. Well I ended up getting wet and just road through it as I was eventually.
That sounds like us on the first day of the Rocky Mountain trip in 2010.
Late in the afternoon we could see rain in the distance which seemed to be moving away - then it was suddenly up on us and we got soaked
My jacket, gloves and boots were waterproof, but I was wearing Kevlar lined jeans and they soaked through in seconds and dripped into my boots
It didn't rain again for ten days, but I had my rain pants on that time
