An independent news group did a sample of gasoline pumps across Canada and found that about two-thirds of the samples were innacurate and gave slightly less than what was paid for.
The difference amounted to about $2.00 for every 50 fillup's, which isn't a great deal of money overall, but over the years it amounts to millions of dollars.
Here in the province of Nova Scotia, only 7% were found to be innacurate with 54% of those in favour of the customer:y19:
Yeah, right, I sure feel like I'm getting a bargain, but I'm not complaining:y2:

Do they not have government officials that check gas pumps in Canada?

We have a Department of Weights and Measures who do that as well as make sure things like scales at grocery stores are accurate.

There is a seal affixed to show the last time it was checked and certified to be accurate.

Oh yes, we have the same thing here. In fact, I would hazard a guess that the US and Candian systems are exactly the same. A lot of our common standards are the same in many walks of life.
This review of gas pumps was done by a news group and is getting some publicity about it.
I don't know the details of the criteria they used - just that it was a sudden news story that hit the airwaves and is getting a lot of play.

Inaccurate - not innacurate:y2:

Gas prices are a hot topic everywhere and there might be a bit of news sensationalism in this story.
Older pumps that have seen a lot of wear and tear seem to be the culprits.
The government is also shown to be wanting and being taken to task for the lack of follow-up on their testing.
Many pumps can go as long as two years between checks.
Some cases of fraud have been uncovered over the years, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this story.

Florida has the same system as PA. When they find an inaccurate pump or scale, they do follow up. If it is still inaccurate, the owner will receive a hefty fine.
