hi,has any one bought a petrol tank from india ie.ebay I was after a T160 one and have a export tank on mine and have been quoted £400 for respray so a tank sprayed and delivered for £300 seems good but worried about quality.

I don't know about the quality of Indian m/c petrol tanks but Morris Minor tinware from Sri Lanka is good - seen some wings, bonnets & sills (don't think that you can obtain NOS.) I have a couple of MZs and have bought parts in Egypt (imported from Turkey) but you have to be careful as a lot are Taiwan copies (some good, some grim and others downright dangerous,) rather than NOS from Germany or Turkey. I bought a NOS tank a while ago for £25 (in primer) and it is perfect, but I don't know where it came from. You could, probably, fly to India, watch your tank being made and have a couple of weeks holiday for not much more than the cost of a NOS painted tank, sourced from the UK. I have been to the Stafford Show and seen beautifully painted & chromed tanks priced at over £600. Perhaps the old adage - "If it's too good to be true ......" can be applied, but the enormous gap in wages may hold the key. It's a gamble, and could go either way, unless you can contact a satisfied customer for details.

I can't speak for tanks either. But I have purchased guitars made in Indonesia that where/are DAMN good quality compaired to the American counter part. Dare I say with my eyes closed if you handed me a Fender Jaguar.....USA made and then a Squire Jaguar (Indo made) I couldn't tell you the difference.

Manufaturing on many things globally has really come to par across the board. Even the "crappy China" stuff is getting really functional these days. :)
Give it a whirl and post up your findings

FYI, this BSA A10 Golden Flash is fitted with a gas tank from the above vendor.
The chrome is first rate and the owner is well pleased with what he received.

The first bike I ever owned was this exact model and year back in the 50's.

About 7 or 8 years ago, I bought one of the early Pakistan/India sourced tanks for a Norton Commando. Rough as a cob and sides were poor match in contour. Welds were very "iffy" looking so I made a rubber stopper with a Schrader valve in it, stopped up the fuel tap holes, put about 5psi in it and put it in my little ones backyard pool. DOZENS of pinhole leaks! Just as troublesome, the mounting for the flip up Cee and Ess fuel cap was a horrible fit and wouldn't allow the cap to open properly. LOTS of filler and a TON of work to get it ready for paint, but eventually was acceptable. Around the same time, Michigan Norton Owners restored a Commando to raffle off for charity and also bought one of these tanks. Unfortunately, painter didn't test fit cap before doing a beautiful metalflake blue paint job and it was ruined in efforts to fix lousy cap mounting, so had to be painted twice. I am TOLD that aftermarket, third world sourced tanks are now of much higher quality, but I have no personal experience with these later ones. I'd advise a very close inspection for fit, finish, leaks, threads, etc, before paint.
