Hi guys, how's everybody?

so, I got stuck in the middle of riding (dead battery) with the street triple R 2013, boosted the battery and went and bought a new one, a slow charger and a voltmeter.

charged up the battery all night, connected everything, started the bike and tested for voltage around the 4k-4.5k rpm
cold bike showed between 13.7-13.8 and climbed to 14.2-14.25 - but after a few min the voltage reading started to go down and down until I got left with around 12.2-12 volts......

before I start ordering all kind of stuff and taking apart the engine cases, I would like to hear some pro advice from you guys ..

thanks in advance,

Liran

Since the batt. was charged up it may be that the elect. system voltage regulator just dropped down to 12V+- . Take it for a ride use all electrical equipment and just watch it for a few days if you weren't having any charging problems before the batt swap its probably ok.

Thank you for your reply buddy appreciate it :)
I’ll have a go at it !

I had a similar situation on my 13 STR. When I checked it the charging voltage was falling with time which indicated a faulty regulator, I also did a diode check which seemed fine but I replaced the regulator anyway using a secondhand Shindengen FH020 from a BMW SB1000R with less then 2000 miles on it. This fixed the charging voltage but I also replaced the battery as it was charging up really quickly on a battery charger which is a sign of a dodgy battery. All was well for the rest of last season but when I serviced it this year the charging voltage was non- existent, I found the stator had failed, maybe due to stress caused by the previous faulty regulator. A new regulator fixed it and all is well again.

The official service manual gives a detailed procedure for checking the charging a system but the resistance readings are so low you need a high quality multi-meter to perform the checks and even then my faulty stator passed the resistance test despite being burned to a crisp.

My advice would be to replace the battery first as a seven year old battery is sub-optimal. If this doesn't fix it then find a compatible used Shindengen regulator off a late low mileage bike. I would also remove the alternator cover, a spoonful of oil will run out, and check the coils for burning especially the ones near the connector. The stator cover needs a good grip and a bit of force to remove in order to overcome the magnetic force.

If the stator is goosed replacing it on that year involves a bit of modification to the connections if you use an aftermarket stator. PM me if you need to go down that route and need details.
