I bought a 2000 Triumph 1200 Trophy recently. It has been in storage since 2009. The previous owner had crashed it then removed all the body parts. The owner was planning to repair it but military duty called and he will not be coming home. May God be with him. His widow called and made me an offer on it that I could not resist. I have rebuilt the carbs, installed a new air filter and ordered all new hoses. The gas tank has a light rust on the interior. I have not decided how to handle this as of yet. I am open to suggestions? I have inspected the frame, suspension, wheels and brakes. All that looks good. The only parts I have seen damaged is the left side of cockpit and the lower fairing. It seems to be be a lot of fasteners, grommets, clips and flange sleeves that have disappeared. I have been looking at a parts diagram online trying to figure out what all is missing.
Turning into a nice winter project. Will keep you posted !!

Joe WELCOME to TT. I am semi retired and have a radiator shop where i also repair MC fuel tanks and some other type of tanks, tell me how bad the rust is in your tank, there are several 'cleaners, rust remover fluids' i can recommend.

:y151:andWELCOMEto the forum from across the pond, sorry to read that the original owner didn't come home.
I'm sure that when you restore it, you'll make his widow proud.
Hope you'll enjoy doing the restoration, and also enjoy the forum too.

The rust is very light. No significant buildup that I can see. I showed it to a motorcycle mechanic yesterday and he said it should not be an issue. I put a lot of time and effort in cleaning cabs and just want to make sure I do not introduce foreign materials to them. I have purchased new fuel filters and plan to install these as well. I would like to rinse the inside of the tank out with some type of chemical that would kill the rust that is present.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your Help !
Joe

Joe, if you have 'light' rust try using a good name brand of white vinegar [ make sure it is white vinegar], get a gallon, just slosh it around or rotate the tank the tank and let it sit at various positions. This is a very inexpensive rust removal trick but sometimes it takes a long time. The vinegar probably will not hurt the paint but wipe it off with a wet rag anyway, good luck.
