I'm a new Bonnevile rider. Yesterday I melted a hole in my bike cover by touching it to my exhaust header. Is there some sort of heat shield that people put on their bikes to prevent this? If this is a stupid question, please have patience.

Nope. Header & exhaust tube get hot. Don't cover the bike until it's had time to cool.

That would be my advice too. The exhaust pipes cool off fairly quickly so give it a little time before you cover the bike.
I don't know of any, but an internet search might find a bike cover with heat resistant shields built in.

Yeah never cover even a warm bike. Also get a cover with vents near the top, it allows moist air to move away.

I park my Bonnie in a garage but still can't stop myself from putting its Kimpex cover over it too. I usually leave it cooling for about 30 minutes before adding the cover and sometimes test the heat the headers are giving off with a very quick touch with the palm of my hand (not recommended).
