While this may be Canada Day and a day to celebrate our great nation, is is also a day of mourning for one province within our country, Newfoundland.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaumont-Hamel_Newfoundland_Memorial801 fighting Newfoundlanders left the trenches and tried to smash through the German lines. They encountered significant machine gun fire and only 68 returned to answer roll call the next morning. An entire generation was wiped out in minutes. On Thursday, July 1st, we will remember their supreme sacrifice, bravery, and valour.
My home province and I have strong links to this day as my Grandfather was a veteran of WW I with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Although he was not involved in this battle because he only enlisted after 1916, he was wounded twice when in France and fortunately for me he survived the War.

I knew about this bit of history, but thanks for reminding me.

Like you, my British grandfather was in WWl and survived. If not, I wouldn't be here either.
After the war he brought his entire family to Canada, and this province, where my British mother met my father and I'm very thankful for it BGRIN
