Going Off The Grid

A friend that I guess would classify as my closest has decided to go completely off the grid. He's leaving for Canada's Northwest Territories in July. We're talking a 13 hour drive North from Edmonton! He's going to basically live off the land for all intents and purposes.

You gotta hand it to him, but I think maybe an intervention may be in order! :)

I couldn't leave the entire world and my toys behind.

There are so many thing we take for granted without even giving them a thought I suppose. Doing something like this will sure make you sit up and take note of them. What is he's reason for wanting to do this. I must admit I would find it a very hard thing to do.

His reasons would take an hour to explain and I wouldn't want to try to paraphrase it for him. He's talked about it for a few years now, but I never took it that serious. He's tired of the rest of mankind I guess would sum it up the best.

I wish him luck. It does seem like a cool thing to do, and I have thought of it. Plenty of shows out these days about the concept. But my ods of freezing to death or being eaten by a bear are much lower here in civilization.

He's a Vietnam Vet so it's not like he's a youngster. He's also very much the outdoorsy type. He seems to live for hunting and fishing year-round. When he's not hunting or fishing, he's golfing. I don't think he'll be doing much of that there!

He bought a satellite phone and has a hand-held GPS in case of emergencies. And he's got some weird solar charging backpack thing.

I'm trying to point out the downside, such as where will his SS and VA checks go, but he's stubborn and laughs it all off.
