Firefox 5.0

I remember a thread about this a while ago started by DaveM, but can't seem to find it.

Just upgraded my desktop to FF 5.0 along with the latest Ubuntu 11.04

Awesome, all my plugins seem to work fine, haven't lost anything.

Faster? hmmm not sure - but it's not slower for sure.

Lots of new stuff and it's gonna take me ages to sort it all out. But out-of-the-box all is good.

Okay done some reading up on Firefox....

Mozilla is going to roll out updates to FF this year in full version updates. We should see up to version 7 before the end of the year.

The worrying bit:

Six weeks after an upgrade release, security updates for the previous release will stop. Basically if you enjoy secure browsing then you should update.
The problem with updating FF is that the API gets broken, this is what decides which plugs-ins will work and which won't.

So, either update and take a chance with what's gonna break in your extensions / plug ins OR change browser.

I'm gonna start having a good look at Chrome, firstly - it's FAST, secondly - their API remains backward compatible with new updates.

anyways, just thought I would share this and warn you guys that staying with an older version of FF might not be secure.

Good information, G; thanks. I won't use Chrome because I avoid Google. Maybe Mozella will wake up and keep the API backwards compatible.

Nothing bad to report as yet.

So far:
Youtube is much better.
Got replacements for all my firefox extensions / plug ins.
Seems quicker overall.
More screen real estate.

Well so far I have no issues at all and have found much the same as what G has outlined above. For those looking at a possible alternate option maybe check out Opera. I use Opera for testing and only use Opera Mini on my Blackberry. I have up until now had no issues with it. The only thing really stopping me from using fulltime is the fact I would just have to get used to some of the different ways it works. I think because I am just so used to FF I just stick with it. I may change to Opera if FF becomes an issue
