Hello, I have a 2016 Thruxton R with 3500 miles, I am the 2nd owner, got it with only 1500 miles.

Yesterday a couple of friends and I got caught on some suburban roads with stop and go traffic, with nowhere to go and the roads being so narrow that we could not filter around the massive line of cars. It looked like many streets were closed which caused an insane amount of traffic. I could feel the bike being hot but did not had any indicators popping up (I replaced the coolant fluid about 1000 miles/6 months ago).

The point is that, once we got to our destination, we did what we had to do and 30 mins later as we were leaving I felt that the Thruxton was behaving oddly at slow speeds when leaving the parking lot, the engine stalled after a few feet.
I turned the bike back on with no issues and that is when I realized the idle revs were lower than 1K rpms, and when I applied the same amount of throttle I normally do the bike would stall again.

Since I was in a rush to get home and didn’t see any temp or engine indicator I just proceeded to turn the throttle a little more to avoid stalling. At speed I did not have any issues, I went straight home and varied my speeds from 40 to 80 mph on my 20+ miles to home just to see if I found any lack of power or other issues, could find any additional issues.
I live Downtown so once I got into my city, I had to stop for a bunch of lights, the low rpm issues came back as soon as I got the first light so I kept the revs a little higher than usual.
As I made my way home, I noticed that by the 3rd or 4th light, the idle issue disappeared and the idle rpms were back at 1K.
I am in the DC area and the temps yesterday were in the 60s so it was not overly hot (thank god).

I am thinking that due to the “smart ecu” that these Bonnies have, the stop and go traffic really made the engine run really lean and it corrected itself once I entered normal riding conditions.

What do you think, would that be a somewhat correct guess?

There is a warranty remap on your bike that may or may not have been done that is supposed to help with the stalling issue .I have experienced the stalling under similar conditions but not the low rpm issue . Have yet to get mine updated , COVID Travel Issue , so will be interested to hear your future report . Since the decat install it has happened much less frequently .

i have a similar issue on my 1200XC Scrambler 2020 at 3670km. Since the very first day, any engine cold start and it stalls right away as it revs back down.

Also at low idle or low gear/low speed, it is quite erratic, somewhat uncomfortable as it revs up and down and wont hold speed.

I thought it was normal as i cannot find anything on this and the dealership is super far from my location.

On top of this, i just got back from work and got some engine coolant liquid spray from somewhere in the radiator area but its to dark to see. This happened after a 10 minutes ride, although it is 31 celcius and super humid this seems odd as i dont do any offroad riding to this day.

No light indicator have come on, anyone heard anything about this ?

The description of your issue would lead me to believe it is not related to the Thruxton stalling recall . Sounds more like a stepper motor problem if the xc even has one . It must have something similar , some small electro mechanical device that adjusts the idle speed using info from the ICU which in turn has received from the exhaust sensor , air intake sensor , coolant temp sensor and who knows where else . If it’s spraying coolant and no temperature light is coming on that would raise a flag for me . Coolant sensor may be faulted or missing !!? A good place to start ? Previous owner could shed some light on the subject

thanks friend,

what you said makes a lot of sense, as i bought it new in april 2021 it is heading back to the dealership in the hope they figure it out.

bringing the bike to the dealer this week .. will keep you guys updated as i could not take time off work.

i did notice the coolant leaks from the lower part of the radiator and that the cooling fan seems to have an angle and touches the rtadiator. i think this is where the issue is ... will see as the mecanics confirms.

As Brooke said. Do the service notice remap and you should be good to go. It worked on my 16 TTR.
Good luck.
yeah,

waiting to see what the dealership wil do. right now its been off the road for one and a half month waiting for the radiator parts. turns out the fan was rubbing on the radiator and pierced it. poor installation of some sort.

kinda disapointed as i bought this in May this year and it is my first non japenese made motorcycle, hopefully it will be all fixed and running for a while with only basic maintenance to do.
