Much like the Mona Lisa, I was a bit underwhelmed. This is one that frightened me as a child and I've never grown to like it. But I can well understand how and why it fetched $119 million!

Gromit, ya betta edit your post, you actually said "I can well understand" when you obviously meant "I can't understand".

$119,900,000.00 come on!

Edit,

I just did a quick calculation, you could but 8,500 Triumph Scramblers with that much. :y2:

No, no edit necessary - I can well understand why it fetched that price. It caused such controversy in it's time and is still a cause of controversial conversation - Munch was agoraphobic and I think many people over the years have related to the anguish he portrayed in this particular painting - remember that at that time, people with phobias etc were institutionalised and debased in the most horrific "treatments". To relate that to, say an eccentric type person with loads of money today, I could definitely see how a person with the means could/would spend $119.9m.

Just about all his paintings are of solitary figures in some type of anguish - I don't know why this particular one gained such fame and such following.

Then again, it could just be a billionaire who hates the piece, but would buy it as an investment piece and stick it in a safe somewhere.

I wouldn't give you $11.99 for it - but then I'm just a Barbarian from the colonies :y2:
When I was in Paris a few years ago I made a point to go and see the Mona Lisa - just to be able to say that I saw it in person. It didn't thrill me that much, but I'm glad I did see it.

OK, so we make two piles of stuff, you can have only one pile or the other.
First pile is 8,500 showroom fresh Triumph Scramblers and the other pile has that painting on its lonesome.
??? I've made my choice. :y2:

I too was disappointed with the Mona Lisa - stared at it for a long time but nope, didn't do much for me. But hey, I've seen it :)

I personally think that an autistic four year-old could do better :y13:.

But what do I know? I'm an engineer and have absolutely no understanding about art and I'm quite happy about that.

The only two paintings that have ever stirred anything inside me are Turner's The Fighting Temeraire;

& Verhaecht's Tower of Babel:

Turner does absolutely nothing for me. My favourite art pieces are the great Renaissance sculptors, like Raphael. But I love art and museums and old cathedrals and little churches. Italy harkens............

Finally....absolute proof i don't get art at all ! :y2: Come on.....I can understand someone liking it because tastes vary wildly and theres always going to be people that like anything. And heck, maybe it's good and my lack of understaning is why i don't see it. But lets be realistic here.....maybe because the guy is a famous artist it's valuable, but for god's sake, $119 mil?!!! Thats bordering on insanity IMO. IT'S A FREAKIN" CHALK DRAWING THAT PROBABLY TOOK 10 MINUTES TO DRAW FOR CHRISTSAKES!:y22::y21::y26:ROTFL

I wonder what type of money people must have that they can drop this amount on something like that

Dave that's the $10,000 question ... well actually the $19,900,000.00 question.
I'm all for hard working or smart people making good money but there comes a point when governments should tax at $0.99 in the $1.00.
