Yes, I was aware of it. It is an interesting history - fraught with politics. I am sure that had Japan not surrendered, MacArthur would have been promoted to General of the Armies. That would have meant that Marshall would also have to be promoted to General of the Armies.

There was a move to promote Schwarzkopf to a Five Star for his leadership in Desert Storm. It never came about. And by the way, there is no difference in pay. Senior pay is capped. A five star and and a four star make the same pay even though the pay charts show different pay grades.
