What do yal think aftermarket or OEM crash bars & skid plate. if you like aftermarket let me know why & the name brand.if you like OEM let me know.

I have the OEM skid pale (aluminum) and the OEM engine bars. I am well pleased with both. I have tested the OEM crash bars several times - on gravel, in rocks and in sand. :y2: They work well; no damage to the engine at all.

Some people don't like the OEM skid plate because it doesn't cover the oil filter. For me, it comes up high enough to deflect gravel and stones kicked up by the tires from hitting the filter.

There is one third party crash bar/engine guard the has actually caused damage to a couple of engines when bikes went down at speed. The guard got knocked into the cylinder cooling fins and damaging them and damaging the cylinders. Therefore, I don't want the guards that cover the cooing fins.

I've read a report on an after market guard that damaged the engine. I don't remember what brand it was so i can't comment more directly on the product. I haven't heard of the OEM guards doing the same so I would tend to lean toward them if I had an 800XC. On my current bike I do have an aftermarket brand that I really like but I've heard the brand is no longer around so I wouldn't be much help in providing information on that brand.

Barry, there are two kinds of riders - those who have dropped a bike and those who are going to. I am sorry that you dropped your Tiger; but I am glad there was no damage. If it helps, I have dropped my 800 XC four times off road. The OEM guards did their job and did it well.

Some guys mentioned that they dropped the 800 XC with the OEM engine gaurds without damage to the enigine.
How did the plastics around the tank hold up? What is protecting them?

The plastics are there to protect the tank and they are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. That said, I have one small scratch on the left one. It is too minor to worry about replacing it. One has to look for it to see it.

Thanks for that Carl.
I suppose that if the bike falls, it would lie on the handle bar, the engine crash bar and the pillion foot pegs and that the rest of the bike would hardly touch ground.

That is pretty much the case. I dropped mine in rocks and a rock caused the scratch in my left plastic guard. However, the tank is undamaged. I had my hard cases on at the time and I got a couple of scratches in them.

Sorry, I see you wrote this back in Nov. I purchased my 2013 1200 XC in Sept. It came with all the protection; however, the crash bars didn't provide protection for the upper engine and gas tank.
So I purchased the SW- Motech crash bars which fit in conjunction with the OEM.
I love the way they and the bike now looks. Oh and I've dropped her in my driveway and the bars did what they were engineered to do.
The picture is of me and my girlfriend in March on Mulholland Drive.
