Some may have noticed that I was AWOL over the holiday weekend.....
This was due to the fact that my High School graduating class had it's 40th reunion on July 5th. I think it was pretty successful considering we had 177 classmates make it - out of a class that graduated about 300. Of that 300, 7 didn't make it home from Vietnam alive and about 22 have died since then of various causes.
I was a member of the Reunion Committee since I'm rather local still and was a class officer back in the day. We had a pre-reunion party the night of the 4th as well at a local classmate's bar.
I know many people hate things like this and have no interest in attending them, but our class was always very tight even among the classes that came before and after our own. Some folks in my class married people from other classes who commented that the Cass of 1968 always did stand-out when it came to parties and sticking together.....we just proved that still holds true.
I've always felt that the tightness of our class back then was at least partially due to the fact that we all knew we were fair game for the draft as soon as we received our diplomas (even though 18 year olds then still couldn't vote - but we could die for our Country).
Unfortunately for me....my two closest buddies couldn't make it back: One just re-married and was on his Honeymoon while the other has taken in his older Brother (who has Downs Syndrome) to live with him in Denver since his Mom and Dad both died. Both took the time however to call during the reunion and I got a chance to talk to them.
I hardly wanted the reunion to end as I was having such a great time reminiscing with everyone. Former varsity hockey teammates of mine re-lived some of our big victories which was really amazing how good some folk's memories still are. Oh...and our foreign exchange student from that year came all the way from Sao Paulo Brazil to attend! He took the award hands-down for the classmate that traveled the furthest to be there.
