SOUTH PASADENA (CBS) — We’ve all heard the saying: no good deed goes unpunished . . . and that’s exactly what happened to a South Pasadena resident who was issued a ticket by police for his charitable act.

When a major traffic light in the area went out Thursday morning, Alan Ehrlich took matters into his own hands, directing traffic at Fair Oaks and Huntington avenues.

“I grabbed a bright orange shirt that I have and a couple of orange safety flags. I took it upon myself to help get motorists through that intersection faster,†said Ehrlich.
Before Ehrlich stepped in, traffic was backed up for more than a mile and it took more than 30 minutes to get through the busy intersection.

Ehrlich said the Sept. 8 incident wasn’t the first and that the light goes out regularly.
“It was just kind of chaos of cars . . . there were stop signs up. But people were challenging each other to get through the intersection,†said Richard Gerrish who works at an office located at the intersection.

Gerrish said Ehrlich cleared up the mess in 10 minutes. After 15 minutes, South Pasadena police say they finally received a call about their newest traffic officer.

Police responded to the scene and told Ehrlich to stop and issued him a ticket, but never stepped into direct traffic themselves.

“I don’t know if this ticket is $50 or $400 dollars. It’s a small price to pay for the greater good,†Ehrlich said.

South Pasadena Police Chief Joe Payne said he did not have the man power needed to staff officers at Fair Oaks and Huntington Thursday and that is safer to allow traffic to back up.

“We have limited resources . . . we need to prioritize them. One of the major intersections out at rush hour in our city should be a priority,†Ehrlich added.

He already has plans to address the matter at an upcoming city council meeting.

Police and the city of South Pasadena say they currently have no plans to change any procedures.

That figures. The cops can't direct traffic and unsnarl a tie; but they can write a ticket.

Well if it was not for our paper sellers and car guards we would have a major traffic issue every time we have a power outage. They normally step in and do the traffic duties this side and do a great job at it as well. We have seen traffic officials just sitting watching a major intersection and doing nothing where the traffic light are out

What a crock - write ticket but won't direct the traffic. I dare say they couldn't let the guy continue doing the job because of the litigation possibilities. I'm sure there was some sausage jockey about to sue someone for something.

Wow.......I really can't add anything but just WOW. REally pays to be a good egg don't it?

I rode to the air show today with a guy that is a foreman with Asplundt Tree Service. He just returned from New Jersey where he was sent to help clean up after the hurricane.

He related a story about some stupid cop who arrested an Edison Electric Co lineman who was there working on downed power lines. The cop was about to pick up and move, barehanded, a live power line and the electric company lineman screamed at him not to touch it. He saved the cop's life, but the cop didn't like being yelled at.

Well, I hope this doesn't offend anyone however, the Police "powers that be" seem to have a history of NOT hiring people with to high an I.Q. They want obedient order takers, not free thinkers and intelligent people because, and I quote "they experience job dissatisfaction with the job and after costly training leave". THis guy sued after being denied a job on the police force though he scored very very high on the tests.

So the police depts. seem to be gearing toward hiring people who are not the "smartest" applicants but the most obedient, and or fit the preferred profile. The people in charge want you to do what your told and not think.....too much....hell if your smart enough you might take a job away from one of them!!!!
I have had the pleasure of being neighbors with 2 police officers myself in the last 20 years, both where great guys, very good at what they did and very "into" the job. However I would not describe either as "intelligent". Not trying to sling mud or anything. Just being honest. I consider them both good friends. But I would not go to either with a technical or financial concern. BUt if I need a speeding ticket fixed......I know who to call :y2:

EWN EXCLUSIVE: Tshwane deputy metro chief’s fake number plates
Barry Bateman | 8 Hour(s) Ago

Tshwane’s deputy metro police chief Ndumiso Jaca is scheduled to meet with the mayor and city manager on Monday to explain why he uses false, identical plates on his vehicles.

An Eyewitness News investigation found his Harley Davidson and BMW Z4 share the number plates BALTY GP, but that these are false.

The municipality said it will conduct a full investigation into the allegations.

Jaca, known as 'Balty' to his biker friends, confirmed to Eyewitness News that he uses the vehicles, but hung up when questioned about the plates.

“If you’ve got issues with me, come to me one on one,†he said.

It is unlikely he will be able to avoid the tough questions when seated before Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

The municipality’s Pieter de Necker said, “We are taking it very seriously. A meeting has been scheduled with him to discuss the matter and the city is also committed to do its own internal investigation.â€

He added that a detailed response would follow the talks.

Jaca is tipped to become the capital’s next police chief.
