I brought this over from the old forum. Gump's post triggered my feeble memory banks.

I found this on other forum and I plan to try it. I am currently running without the snorkel.

I detached snorkel from my T 100, and installed a rubber bellmouth ( inside diameter 55 mm) from Polaris snowmobile, it fits direct and pretty tight to snorkel`s hole, originally that bellmouth is inside of snowmobiles airbox.

It is double-sided, so I had to (with sharp knife) cut away side which goes inside Bonnie's airbox.

I get mine for free, because my brother-in-law works at snowmobile/motorcycle repair shop, he found it from shops junks.

Size and shape is same as those 100 $ aluminium bellmouths from Norman-Hyde.

1997-1998 years Polaris Ultra SPX wit 3 cyl, engine, possibly Polaris Storm has same bellmouths in its airbox, Below is the link to Polaris parts sheet , bellmouth is part # : 2, Inlet, Plenum

Polaris Belmouth]http://www.partsland.com/index.cgi?N=1142506370-19802&P=SM-1997-ULTRA-SPX-OIL-TANK-AIR-BOX]Polaris Belmouth

The price is $12 - $13.

Finally got around to removing the snorkel from my airbox. Definitely added a little intake roar, seems like the power hits a little harder @ 4500rpms. I am going to Lowes tomorrow though and see if I can find a rubber coupling I can fit in the opening. I want to fit this with a stainless steel mesh just to keep insects and other vermin out of the airbox. I'll let you know what I find, should be even cheaper than the Polaris snorkel.

I just got a polaris bellmouth in the mail today. I'll probably install in in the next week or so. I'll let you all know how well it works

Dschief and Germ, please do let me know your results. I have been running without the snorkel for over a year and a half. It helped get rid of that dip in the torque curve.

I will tell you one thing I've noticed right away, my fuel mileage has gone up dramatically. I usually get between 42-44 mpg on my rides to see my kids. My last 2 refills I got just over 46 mpg! That's running 75 mph on the highway, running with traffic ofcourse, with a bit of stop-n-go thrown in. I'm happy! That snorkel is air choke.

Today, I rejetted to 125 mains and 42 pilots and put on one shim. Since i had everythign torn apart anyways; I added a uni filter and replaced the snorkel with the polaris bellmouth. I'm not sure exactly what the polaris bellmouth added to the overall effect, but damn...my bike runs great now. when i get some extra time i'll try running with and without the bellmouth and see if i notice any sort of difference.

Carl from all reports I've heard the Polaris bellmouth is a DOUBLE bellmouth;half is cut away to fit on the bonnie's airbox.Perhaps some kind user could sell you the other half for cheap.Apparently the cruisers can use the bell on top AND bottom, while the side mount Bonnie airbox cannot use a right side bellmouth due to the airbox shape.

That's the impression I've gotten, too. Have you tried it? Or have you removed your airbox?

yeah it is a double bellmouth, but i don't think the center portion is wide enough to turn it into two separate bellmouths. i cut off just the curved part of one side and didn't leave enough material on it to attach it to anything

Still cheap at 12$....I of course paid nearly 10 times that.

okay-

what is this snorkel thing? something to do with the AI? if the dealer removed my AI, do i still have a snorkel? and if i do, why remove it?

The idea is that the snorkel restricts the airflow to the air filter. Some say by removing it you get an increase in performance. I must admit I did not notice the difference with my one when removed. You will find it attached to the air box sort of a rubber tube thing and it just clips out. This will be the intake of your air box.

The snorkel is located under the left sidecover. It is a rubber thing that resembles an elephant trunk. Its purpose is to reduce intake noise for EPA noise certification. You can simply pull it out of the airbox. I have pulled them from both of our T100's.

like intake noise!! and i certainly understand the effect of velocity stacks on open race type carb throats, but i fail to see what effect a bellmouth used on this side of the airfilter can achieve . installing free flow filters like uni and k&n, and then having some kind of bellmouth between the carb and filter element could be advantageous. but the filyer should negate any effect of the bellmouth as used here. agreed it makes a cleaner looking set up, but its hardly in view under the panels and seat.

now i am still relatively new to hinkleys, and appologize for asking questions and still missing the point but it seems pulling the snorkel gets rid of somwthing ya really don't need , or in my case, want. as to, if the bellmouth can improve
intake sound, cool. maybe 12 bucks is worth that. i don't see it possibly increasing performance though.

Some say the Belmouth forces more into the airbox. I have not seen any dyno runs without and with the belmouth for comparison.

The only way to know is try it for yourself, and to NOT do it as the same time as other mods. Pulling the snorkel for may, especially SM owners often yields a very considerable boost in power. For me it was probably the biggest power boost of any other single thing i've done, even more than the thunderbike pipes themselves ! So if you pull the snorkel to put a bellmouth on and feel a big boost, consider the fact that it's probably more likely the removal of the snorkel that is responsible for most or all of it. So pull the snorkel and ride for a while, then install the bellmouth.
