FWIW, I'm using a DID X-ring drive chain chain on my BSA B44. It fits perfectly and there is no rubbing anywhere. The X-ring allows the chain to be narrower, thus no rubbing.
I'm using a Renold 5/8 x 3/8 drive chain on my Triumph T100S which will not need to be replaced for some time, but when the time comes I'll look into the X-ring.
I think I'm correct in saying that the same drive chain is used on all the 500 models since about 1959/60.

There is only one make of 530 (5/8 x 3/8) O or X ring chain that will fit a Triumph; unfortunately, I cannot remember which make ...

The 3/8 inch part of the chain specification is the width of the sprocket, so O or X rings make the overall width of the chain - over the outer sideplates and pivot pin heads - greater than the same chain without 'rings'; Triumph was not particularly generous with space between the chain and surrounding non-moving parts.

I have never come across a Triumph that was not fitted originally with a 5/8 x 3/8 chain. The only other possibility is perhaps 5/8 x 1/4 on some very low power models - Tiger Cub, Terrier, etc.?

Thanks Rudie. I wasn't going to make the leap for an X-ring chain for the T100S until I thought about it seriously. The current Renold chain is barley used so it wouldn't have been for a long while anyway.
I suspected that it might not fit the way it does on the BSA, and I'm quite happy to use a Renold chain.
