Buying Spare Fenders And Side Covers?

Have I gone off the deep end?

Read on another moto forum a suggestion from a guy who says he buys new, unpainted side cover/fenders for his new (or new-to-him) bike. He paints them in the bike's colors as desired and swaps out the cheapo fenders for the pristine OEM parts. That way, if he dings the bike up or worse, has an accident, he still has the OEMs if he should decide to sell the bike or just slap them on to replace the damaged ones.

You could also do a custom paint job on the bike if you wanted. I'm picturing on a side cover:

OK, totally kidding....

I can't see myself selling Barney any time soon, but oddly enough, this sounds like a decent bit of advice, especially because I'm so new to this. I know there's a drop in my future -- hopefully it'll just be a parking lot dumbazz event and not a major accident.

What's the verdict, gents? TIA!!

Well......I always say, "It's your bike so do whatever you want," but that's not something I would do.
It's somewhat in the same category as buying an extended warranty.
Do you do it or take a chance?
I choose to take the chance, but that's just me.

I have purchased extra fairing kits for my sport bikes for the same reason. I have one that has gone back and forth from track to street so I swap out kits just in case I damage them.
it does help when reselling too. aftermarket replacement kits are not expensive if you shop around. but I haven't done anything like that on any other type of bike though...

Unless your going to race it, I can't see the need to buy all that gear. I'd buy oil filters, oil, spark plugs spare bulbs and consumables like that, these are things that you will use in time. But as has been said it's up to you.

Hemi, Rocky, DRod, MOT -- thanks for the snap back into reality. I'm going to look on the positive side and hope that if I do an accidental parking lot drop, the crash guard will help. Anything more than that, and spare fenders probably won;t help with the body damage.

Thanks, guys!
