It's always cool when they molt.

Did you save the old skin?

I never really asked anyone how they measure their spider when I read about a length.....is that the length of the entire spider including legs front to rear. Is it only the body? Or is that a sideways measurement?

Boris would be about 7-8 inches total length front to rear including legs. But that seems like a inaccurate way of measuring. 4.5 inches body length.

They MOLT???? I have never seen spider skins lying around. Thats just gross. Do the hairy ones leave "hairy" skin behind? :ya2:

yeah, you can see the fangs too. pretty cool.

i've saved all his molts so far. when they get a little bigger i'll mold one in clear resin - i've seen one done and it looks pretty cool.

your supposed to measure from the front left to rear right fully outstretched. I just gauge a diameter from when it's in stationary mode.

i can actually feel his little feet now when he walks on my arms 'n hands. lol - he still has to go into 4x4 mode over my arm hairs though. it's very funny to watch.

I've read where people say how large their T is, but I never asked exactly how that measurement was made.

Using that method, Boris would be a good 8-8.25 inches. I can't seen her getting bigger than that though. She's nearing the end of her lifespan now.

Avion,

I have been trying to find out if using one of those "Moon Glo" black lights as a heat source is OK for a T.

It gets fairly cool for a pink-toe around here (they like 80-85 degrees F). I have a plug-in-electric warmer on the bottom of the enclosure, but it produces only a small amount of warmth. I've been supplementing that with a 25 watt black light which raises temps about 5 degrees.

I just hope they aren't bad for Ts.

How long have you had her? I think aboreal pink toe females live about 15-20 years.

You have to be a bit careful with heating, I would stay away most lamps though, they really do dry the air out which can create havoc when they try to molt. I presume you have a small water dish in her enclosure, or do you mist regularly?

Also it's not such a good idea to heat from the bottom, rather the side, that way she can move far enough away from the heat source so as to be comfortable.

However, all that said - you've had her a long time and she's still going strong so you gotta be doing right by her.

When I get a decent camera I'll attempt some close up pics.
As far as taking Curly to TTC, the rats would be on the menu. lol

She's about 20 years old now and 25 is the upper limit.

I do have a small water dish with aquarium stones in it to keep the crickets from drowning. I don't use any sponge because they can get mold and bacteria. The water dish is directly over the heat so it evaporates the water into the enclosure making humidity. I also will mist it if the humidity is too low.....I maintain around 75%.

Since she's a tree-climber, she never walks on the floor of the enclosure at all, therefore I don't worry much about being too close to the heat. Plus the heat pad only gets mildly warm and there's a layer of vermiculite there.

She mostly hangs out around the top of the enclosure (2 feet high) and when the black light is on, she'll tend to gravitate under it as if she enjoys the extra heat.

You guys are not well in your heads. It sounds as if you actually LIKE her.
Aboreal pink toe? Curly? Heaters for a SPIDER? If you took her to TTC I would have to buy a BMW. Yuk I've got goosies. This weekend I am camping in a game reserve and you've given me the heebee jeebees. Another session with the hypnotherapist is obviousy on the cards.
